I felt like making a thread after going to the Hendrix Experience show last night. Some of my favorites played like Satch and Eric Johnson. Brad Whitford from Aerosmith played with his 14 year old son along with Johnny Lang. Vernon Reid........ Everything he plays after 5 seconds all sounds the same.

Brad Whitford is pretty good, not sure why Joe Perry got all the solos? From what i heard last night, Brad should have been playing more leads in Aerosmith.

Satch was playing an Ibanez but it had 3 singles. He still sounded like Satch.

I still love Eric Johnson but he's just not the same player he was.

I've never seen Kenny Wayne Shepard live but he completely owned the night. He was on fire and his tone was just perfect and he really lit the crowd up as well. His singer is also really good. And he had by far the best tone, i think he played into 2 Fender combos probably cranked and boosted with a Tube Screamer but it sounded like he had a decent amount of gain.

I know he was labeled as an SRV ripoff but damm, last night he was awefully impressive.

Kenny's such an awesome player, I'm not suprised he ruled the night! Man, I was shocked when I found out he was battling a heavy drug addiction. I don't know why I was shocked, but I was lol. Really glad he's out there owning the stage again.

I'm an Eric Johnson fan as much as the next guy but my least favorite thing he does is Hendrix tunes. His version of Red House is so wimpy

And yes Whitford's a much better player than Perry, but the image of that band was Tyler & Perry, the Toxic Twins. You can replace Whitford and people probably won't care all that much, but take away Perry after years of branding and you've got a problem. It's too bad, I wish Whitford got more spotlight.

I saw a TV special a few years ago that had Kenny traveling the country looking for old blues guys. Showed him jamming with tons of peopele, some famous, some not..... He was RIDICULOUSLY good.

Hung out with him twice, once in 96 once in 2001. Both times he layed the smack down on the guitar like I have never heard before. And I mean holy crap, did you hear that, I got goosebumps the size of gobstoppers on my arms kinda smack down. His is rediculously talented.

Yeah, guys like KWS and Bonamassa bury John Mayer. And Satch did have a Floyd on his 3 single coil loaded Ibanez but he wasn't really doing whammy stuff. He sounded straty, but still like himself.

And all the players were using Marshall's or Fenders except Reid who had a Recto and a Parker Fly. PLaying Hendrix tunes with a metal tone and trying to fit 3 million sloppy notes in a solo didn't work.

YeahDanny, you cant even compare Joe B and Mayer, it isnt even close. As far as Vernon reid goes, I never liked that guy, totally irritating to me. Ive been told that I just dont get him and that hes considered some kind of a genius at freeform/improvisational fusion but whatever,he doesnt do a thing for me..

Totally agree....KWS was just on fire last night. In a room filled with incredible players he stood head and shoulders above the rest in all categories. Ripping tone, very clean, tasteful playing and he was just full of soul. He was totally on another level compared to Reid, Satch and EJ!

Heard about this tour. Would be fun to attend. As you know Dan, I am a huge Satch fan and although he can be a tad boring live I will always love his playing and tunes. He is the single biggest influence on my playing. I had read somewhere that he had a one off Ibanez with single coils. I love KWS too. I've seen him a couple of times and love his playing and tone.

At one point in my life Eric Johnson could do no wrong. His guitar tone and even his vocals were great. For me, he lost his way after Venus Isle. Tones, Ah Via Musicom and Venus Isle are great. I don't know what it is but his infatuation with Hendrix and blues kind of lost me. I love blues but he had a style all his own on his early albums that he is not duplicating. I have no problem with musicians evolving but his transition has been utterly boring. It's too bad! I guess I have his back catalog to admire.

I agree so much with almost all of these posts to the point where it almost feels like an absolute!

Kenny Wayne Reminded me last night as to why he was one of my favorite and influential guitarists of all time. Absolute killer playing and tone! Commanding! His stage prescence and stage moves are also very entertaining to watch. Definitely a "guitar hero"!

I also agree with the Eric Johnson stuff posted too. Venus isle tour was seriously like a religious experience watching him play. After he tried to go all bluesy and hendrixy he kinda lost me. Its like serching for a musical identity that you already have had the whole time. Hes way too good for that. He has been my all time favorite player, and that doesnt change, but i wish he would continue from the venus isle stuff and move forward..

I couldnt stand for a second listening to Vernon Reid. Mumbo jumbo.. If i didnt play the guitar id think he was fast. Since i do, i think it sounds like slop... Sorry .. I probably offended someone. Im sure he's probably a cool guy or whatever but this is just my opinion.

I haven't seen them THAT many times...maybe 10, but I completely agree. Brad had better tone and better chops every time. THe first time, I walked away scratching my head, but as stated above, Joe is part of the branding of that band, Brad really isn't.

It is a shame, but I think he is probably comfortable with his role.

I saw KWS in concert about 10 years ago. He was very impressive. I was surprised he didn't sing (just assumed he was like Johnny Lang). I will say the guitar player for the local opening blues band gave KWS a run for his money though.

Anyone pick up the 'new' Hendrix album 'Valley of Neptune' yet? I am one of those suckers who picks up the new concerts and CDs they release. I gotta have 50 versions of Purple Haze

Whitford DOES play a lot of the more 'note-y" leads on the older Aerosmith stuff.

I understand people not liking Vernon's solo style but man the guy can write a good riff. Living Colour was one of the few bands from the 80's who's music was leagues above all the lame hair metal shit around it. Every guy in that band was great on their instrument and IMHO Glover has one of the best voices in rock.
