And the guy in Spread Eagle was pretty damm good.

not feeling this one--his guitar isn't tuned and the production of the gtr tone is cheap in a bad way.
but i've seen and heard a LOT worse from that era.

just imagine what this sounded like:

I liked Spread Eagle, Being NYC boys, I caught them a bunch of times and they always put on a great show. I dug the guitar player but it wasnt like he floored me.

As far as the track goes, It was the same on all of their stuff which is a shame, they really would have benfitted from some slick production. Im not sure about the tuning issues but as much as I love the tune, I thought that the solo fit the bill without wow factor..

Beat me to it Bro, The whole album/band is under the radar and Steve McKnight wails over all of it...

HOW did I not see you'd pull this one out and dust it off... still one of my Favorites, Bro. Got that Lynch type thing happening, but his note choices over these changes STILL just kill me.... Good man!!

PAT: That Don Dokken still a killer. I sat and worked many a nite back in the day tryin like hell to rip Billy Whites work on that album apart.. and let me not 4get Norum... Simply amazing, but just a tad too late to the dance... like a lot of us... lol!!

that was cool.

that guy has the marks of a veteran...

i listen for certain things in a player, like whether or not the note choice is musical and has a specific purpose, or did they just play a fast flurry because it was easy to play technically and the pattern is one that you can autopilot through...i.e. pentatonic blues box 1 wank.

the other thing which i struggle with personally is switching from a fast linear passage into "musical" vibrato. shawn lane was one of the greatest at that--shred grand poobah but his phrasing and bending was very soulful.

i watched david gilmour on tv a few days ago and every note he ended on was bent with his vibrato bar--no finger vibrato at all-- and i don't dig that. i'm guilty of it and maybe that's why i hate it and floyd rose trems so much!

it robs a lead of personality and becomes a crutch for not being willing to bend a note with hand vibrato, which is obviously more difficult and creates more room for error by clunking into other strings. when i think of great players...eddie, yngwie, dave meniketti, gary moore, uli, neal schon, they each have their own definitive signature finger vibrato, and it's pitch perfect and rhythmically on point.

this is the "end of the movie"…walking out of the theatre….credits roll ……..it's your life buddy

I dig the solo on this tune - love the tone too - kind of a shreddy Bryan Adams type of thing - seems like I remember liking this whole tape. Solo starts at 2:45

I used to love Honeymoon Suite and think that Derry Grehan is a great guitar player. Very tasteful playing.

Yng at 1:45

LOVE that solo! One of the first Yngwie solos that I ever dissected note-for-note. Other highlights for me on that album were the solo for "Jet to Jet" and "Kree Na Koree" (which my high school metal band used to play). Good stuff!

With all of the mention of Uli in this thread, one of my favorite solos of all-time is from his solo album "Beyond the Astral Skies". It's called "I'll Be There" and it's a pretty slow, mellow tune, but near the end he really gets ripping along and I've always loved that section. Here's a guy on YouTube doing an awesome job of playing it.

Used to wear my "The Big Prize" tape cassette out. Good stuff!

Wow. You guys are killing me here. Crash Burn is sweet! I used to play that disc all the time after I saw Don on that tour. Great guitar work.

Testament's Return To Serenity and Practice What you Preach are great too.

Street Fighting Man is one of Lynch's best also. I am going to listen to some of the others now.

I'm going to throw Dave Meniketti...Open Fire LIVE!!!
Totatlly RIPS!!!!!

Yeah, this is a fun topic that could go on forever...

I'll throw in Vandenburg's "Burning Heart". I was a young guitar kid at the time, but that one really caught me.

Second would be Steve Lukather (I think) on Lionel Richie's "Hello". Really love that solo...song, not so much!

Holy Crap Bill!!! I love Harry Cody, he could play his ass off and had killer tone( it was through him that I found out about tommy folkesson...)

I wore the first 3 albums out, especially second coming..

A couple more I like:

John Petrucci - Curve (solo at 1:33)

Opeth "Windowpane" (Mikael Akerfeldt) - 1st solo is at 1:11...brilliant solo, great song too and no Cookie Monster vocals ;)

Yngwie Malmsteen "Perpetual" - 2nd solo at 2:44...careful, the descending arpeggios at 2:53 will give you whiplash...elite.

great call--totally unsung..and not no aldo nova! although i think aldo and adje and yngwie all shared that tiger jacket back in the day

here's one of my faves from adje

2:36 in
his lead tone was cutting and honky in a cool way, but his crunch could have used more "sykesian sauce"
the singer reminds me of tygers of pan tang-
