King's X on TOUR

I am going to the show in NJ (Starland ballroom). Ty better hope TT Quick doesnt go on before them... TT Quick is a killer band... and the guitar player taught Dave Sabo and Zakk Wylde how to play guitar. TT Quick also knows how to set up their sound. I have seen may headlining bands back in the day shit a brick having to play after them.

That's what happened in Dallas on the Extreme / King's X tour. King's X totally upstaged Extreme tonally and in state presence!

I like it better than Ogre Tones. Typical stuff for them. It's not a return to their Faith Hope Love sound, but it's a solid effort. They don't do as many vocal harmonies, as I've heard that Dug doesn't like to sing what other people (TY?) have wrote. My only complaint would be with Ty, some of his acoustic songs have great melodies and feel, but his lyrics are sometimes corny, especially when he tries to rhyme stuff...example (from Ear Candy

I completely agree. Ive been a huge fan since Gretchen came out and are in my top 3 biggest influences of all time. That said I have'nt really gotten into much they've done post Dogman with exception of Tapehead which had some solid songs and Ear Candy that did as well. All else has really left me flat. I love Ty Dug and Jerry but they just dont write like they used to. Funny thing is I actually like Ty's and Dug's latest solo stuff a bit better than the last Kings X albums.

I still like their new music, it's just that the newer stuff is not as ambitious from an overall production standpoint. Fewer harmonies, simpler lyrics, shorter songs. I guess basically the new releases are less complex. I still think Ty is a great writer on guitar. Give him two strings and he could probably write 100 songs in a day.

I think their solo stuff is diluting the King's X writing. Both of Ty's most recent CD's and Doug's latest are much more interesting to me than XV. It seems that its possible that the new KX albums simply represent a group of songs that didn't make their solo CDs.

Of course, any KX is better than no KX and will be a sad day indeed when the band stops putting out new material and touring it.

I hear ya, although I haven't picked up Ty's recent CD. They put out so much music that I get the feeling they enter the studio without much direction or focus and just crank out 10 songs as they come about. The new stuff always seems about 90% complete to me...just lacking some discretion for lyrical content (ty), and extra polish to separate the songs from each other.

My thoughts exactly!! I dont care about complexity, I'm talking about two great tastes coming together and intermingling in the most delicous way musically via Ty and Dug melding and that aint happening anymore.

For years, I always thought they wrote together, and not just having each guy bring in songs. However, I think that a KX album is a compilation of (mostly) Doug and Ty's music songs that feature each other and Jerry as performers. When I look at each guys (and I guess I mean Ty and Doug as the primary song writers) solo stuff, I really see what they bring - Doug brings the funk, the HEAVY, and a lot of aggression, while Ty's direction is more melodic, with the big "King's X" chorus and of course, more guitar-centric tunes. We probably all are happy that Doug seems to the primary lyricist!

Was there really even one, REAL standout guitar solo on XV? Ty's "Rock Garden" and "Balance" are both long-ass guitar-a-thons...why not bring THAT to the next KX CD instead of a bunch of mid-tempo pseudo-rockers that never really get going...the 90% finished reference above makes a TON of sense. Arrgh, oh well, I guess I criticize that which I most value!!

Me too, there are some songs that stick out here and there on different albums, but as a whole, not as solid. I just got the new one so I'm coming in a little late, haven't got my teeth into it yet. Post Dogman has been a bit lackluster for them, but they are such good guys, that I hold out hope they will pull one together, and get some good for themselves. They sure deserve it
