Nah, not really bro.....didn't mean to drag that into it. I just meant that a lot of the time it seems like that's the only thing that anyone has to say, is that his vibrato is weak........there's nothing constructive about that at all. If I posted a vid and my vibrato was weak, would I get the same treatment, or would you guys be the good buncha dudes you are every day and give me some tips or advice or something?

You may not be saying it but its quite often used in his defense, correct? Going on about his sig gear,money or the very small handful of tunes that hes written for a band with a huge catalog doesnt speak to his talent or lack there of, especially when you take everything into account and in the proper context.

Yeah, it IS used in his defense, and it's wrong......agreed. But at the end of the day if you can hang with a dysfunctional family like Metallica is reputed to be and do so for over 30 years, you've got a lot more talent than I do. Mega shows, mega tours, going out there and doing it night after night after night, while still writing and still trying to remain relevant.

As you are astonished by the hate, Im astonished at the reverence.. In the end, neither opinion matters in the grand scheme but the bad should be welcomed with the good...

I'll say this....I don't revere the guy, and to be honest I don't think I've ever listened to anything after AJFA more than once.....and I'll agree that the bad should be welcomed with the good.....it's just the sheer vehemence in these threads that pop up. I can't believe that there's this much hate on a forum devoted to guitars, music and gear. Where some people see weak vibrato and overused wah, I see part of the soundtrack of my life from about '83 up to about '89. Maybe I'm just too sentimental about all of this, in the end.

I'm not a pro and never will be.....that was never anything that I wanted from music; I just play for fun, and maybe that's the difference. Either way, I'm done with it. I'll stay out of these threads from now on, and just listen to old Metallica and enjoy it for what it is.

I just kind of wanted some explanation from you guys......this is usually the best forum I visit for gear and opinions, not hate and bashing and I just wondered why.

As I eluded to earlier, the subjective nature of this entire debacle is why threads like this always end up as they do. We all have opinions and when it comes to topics like this, We're all coming at it from different places. Unfortunately, that tends to bother people on varying levels when in the end, it should just be friendly, civil discussion regardless of preference..

FWIW, I dont and have never had beef with you and nor was I looking to engage in any. Im certainly sorry if I came off harsh to you as I definitely didnt mean that.

On the latest disc, there's a few solos that are fantastic...& then there's a few(1in particular) that flat out suck...I think Who is in the control room saying "great job, you nailed it"

most of you guys should rejoice at the fact that kirk isnt the most talented but that he found the right situation and made a decent living from it, that means theres hope for alot of you guys.
it proves you dont have to be the best, all you need is to believe in yourself and enjoy what your doing and find the right situation.

im a kirk fan, i loved most of his stuff except for st anger and death magnetic.
long before i played guitar i was just like most of the general public and enjoyed music without thinking he sucks, most people dont worry about that stuff.
they listen to a song and if its good its good and they dont worry about how technical or tone. anytime i seen metallica live i rarely heard people complaining about kirk or any other memebers, usually everybody was having a good time. most people enjoy music and theres more that dont play guitar than do. i also wanna say that theres alot of people that dont pay attention to every note of a solo, it just goes in one ear and out the other and the song is more important to them than the solo. guitar forums complain about kirk but most of the world doesnt put alot of thought into it or worry about it. they just listen to the albums and enjoy the songs and its that simple.

Back in the 80's Kirk would eat sleep n drink metal, he lived for playing guitar , metal, and beer. Nowadays he is a totally different person and middle aged with different passions. Don't you think that it's normal to slack off and or get tired of the metal lifestyle and playing the same songs and same style after 30 yrs?? I can't blame him. And I bet most who criticize him learned their "opinion" after hearing the repeated banter trashing Kirk on the net rather then coming to their opinion on their own based on the music. His solos are musical, the kind that u can hum along to that u remember and are a perfect fit with Metallica. His contributions to metal and music in general are more then most here realize. Just look at the foldout poster of kip winger in his thong to see the direction metal was in and going before real rockers like Metallica and guns kicked the hairsprayed door down.

@Rupe.....I get that part of it, bro......I do. And everyone is entitled to their opinions, whatever they may be.

The part that gets me: sure, these guys can sit in their bedrooms playing Kirk solos at double speed and never make a mistake, and do it for hours on end......but can they invent those solos in the first place? No, they can't.....if they could, they'd just do it instead of playing keyboard warriors who spit negative whiny crap about whether his stuff is in key.

I don't think Kirk sucks. I don't think Kirk is a great guitar player. I don't the the "average listener knows what vibrato is. I do think the average listener hears nuances in music and in guitar solos that they may not be able to describe (like vibrato) but will form an opinion on. I do think there are several players on this forum that can "invent" solos in the first place, and to my taste way better then Kirk. I don't think many with negative opinions of Kirk are expressing their opinion out of jealousy.

Being able to type an opinion about a guitar player is mutually exclusive of the ability to also write great music and solos. You're letting your emotions override reason and going to the opposite extreme of those you are criticizing which is no better.

Taste in music, guitar players, women and iced cream is subjective and letting the opinion of others get to you to the point of emotional outbursts is a waste of energy.

Trust me, I know where you're coming from, but just let it go bud. All you're going to do is invite a riot potentially by people who couldn't care less about Kirk, but who do enjoy getting a rise out of people (like you).
