If he had said Exodus, we would've let that one go... :D cause it's true. :D

You hit the nail on the head. I have a lot of respect for Lars from a musical perspective. Here is guy who had no real natural ability to play the drums. Just listen to early demos or Kill 'em all. But he had the passion and a vision and basically forced himself to play the drums and by the time justice came out was actually quite good. Then he got fat, dumb and happy and his chops went down the tubes. He has his moments but I always feel like he's just going through the motions when I watch him play...I get the same feeling from Kirk.

@BobSavage: you're right. I'm good, and back to being happy. I did go over the edge a little, but I'm back.

Right on man...

I'm not a Kirk fan, but i will say this.

He wrote more memorable solos than most other guitarists (including any of you) ever will.
He inspired more kids to pick up a guitar and learn to play than most guitarists (including any of you) ever will.
He was part of a musical experience that brought metal style of music to the attention of many people than normally would never have ever heard it.

When you sit in a room with him and out play and out write him, is when you earn the right to talk trash about his playing.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the annoying, blathering 'OMG he sucks sooooo bad" attitude that seems to float around is way out of line.

Usually when any of us write piece of music and show it to our peers, the first words or though in their heads is that they hope people listen to it with an open mind and ear and no try to pigeonhole them into a sterotype and see their vision. But then when listening to someone else's work, everyone is a fucking critic and honestly, it's pretty sickening behavior. Especially coming from other "musicians"

Have some fucking respect for a fellow guitar player who sat in his room for 8 hours a day when he was a kid (just like you) who actually had the chance to make something of himself doing the thing he loves. You dont see him logging onto some internet message board and trash talking your clips on Soundcloud on what an over rated piece of shit you are.

C'mon guys, be fair.

Quoted for saying exactly what I wish I would have said, and doing it more eloquently.

My wife won't suck when she's on her period either. Says she doesn't feel sexy and isn't in the mood. Guess Kirk is the same way.

Kirk is Kirk. He has his sound n his style. Just cuz a couple wankers hate don't mean shit Metallica didn't get huge on guitar forums. Millions of ppl love them. I particuly don't like some players cuz not my style but I don't waste time bashing cuz it doesn't mean they suck anyway.
There are a lot of over rated guitarists out here n a lot more in appreciated ones. If we focused more on them we would be getting something done !

Well I guess that's it then. There should no longer be any opinions of another player expressed or rather "blathered" unless:

1) You can write more memorable solos (who's qualified to judge this?)
2) You've inspired more kids to pickup the guitar than they have
3) You were part of a band that brought a style of music to more people that wouldn't have heard it than they did.
4) If you have sat in the same room with the other player and out played and out wrote them (who's qualified to judge this?)

I understand what you "defenders" are trying to get across but the way it's being done makes virtually no sense at.

The fact of the matter is that taste is subjective and many people form extreme opinions, make extreme statements (ex. "Kirk can't play at all," "don't judge unless you've whipped him in a face off" or "this is the best amp EVER"), even as if their opinion is fact. That's just the way it is and all of the illogical arguments in the world will not change it.

My opinion of Kirk is that as a lead player he's had some very memorable moments and some very much forgettable moments. Then again, I'm not generally an extremist in my opinions of music or guitar players.

Although a few valid points were made here, for the most part this post is simply more opinion stated as fact.

+1

But we must be objective...

The whole point is respect.
People on the Internet lack it on a staggering level.
It's surprising coming from those you all want to be judged fairly when it comes to their own music. You can say it's my opinion stated as fact, but your missing the point a little.

I don't listen or really even like Metallica, but I do find it hilarious when a bunch of butthurt old fucks go crazy and get angry over a guy who has achieved more success, seen more and accomplished more musically than 99.9% of any musicians ever hope to. Go buy another $3000 amp and sell it a week later folks. That'll give you something to do other than debate a man's skill level who is most assuredly better than you.

I wish my playing was half as good as Kirk's.

just sayin'

I can only blame some of it on my arthritis. :aww:

With this, I agree. It's people in general that lack respect, however, any communication medium that is for the most part anonymous seems to bring out the worst in people.

Quite frankly, I've had all kinds of terrible things said about my playing, writing and tone, and I couldn't care less. In fact, I don't even care whether it's a genuine opinion or somebody just being a jerk. Heck, somebody actually posted on my youtube site that my face looks stupid when I play. Um, so?

Many of Kirk's biggest detractors here are practically jizzing themselves silly over his latest choice of amplification.

"Opposition (chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk)
Contradiction (chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk)
Premonition (chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk)
Compromise"

Just sayin' :D

Real sorry about that face comment on youtube. If it makes you feel any better, I look stupid all day long.

LOL... you and me both my friend.

Correction though, he didn't say stupid, he said MOST ANNOYING FACES EVER! My response was "If you think that's bad you should see me walk, or talk, or ride a bike, or take a hike..."
