Just finished up this guard for my partscaster. Gonna give the new “Eruption” pickup a go. Dimarzio Satch Track in neck.

I should be able to give a report tomorrow. This particular guitar has had the following pups in the past.

JB
Custom Custom
Tonenerd Sunset Strip
Tonenerd Roxy
Pariah Destruction 70
Duncan Custom Shop Frankenstein
Duncan Skolnick Signature

Update - So the Eruption kicks ass. Kind of a misnomer because it’s not really throwing off an EVH vibe to me. To my ears it’s a tweaked and perfected JB. Same overall vibe but nowhere near as “smeared” in the low mids and much more open and dynamic. 80’s metal perfection.

Most people hate on Gibson pups. I admit that they have some real stinkers, but I love this thing along with the Custombucker and the 70’s Tribute bucker. The BB1 and BB2 are also decent pups.

Give me some deets on that pickup.
What did you think about the Destruction 70?

I liked the Pariah a lot. It’s actually going back in if the Eruption doesn’t work out. Of all the pickups listed, it was the most open sounding but still hefty. FWIW, all those pups I tried were with a single 500k volume and no tone pot. I decided to add a tone control this time around.

Killer rig . Cool that the pickup is working out for you. From the looks of it in the picture it lines up perfectly with the Strat trem so I’m guessing they’re trremspaced

I would fully expect this pickup to sound JB-ish, so it's unfortunate they marketed this the way they did. Maybe "OutOfTheCellar 'Bucker" would have been more appropriate :-)

Yes. It sits between a JB and your Roxy in that department. Granted I had both those pups wired with no tone pot. So not exactly a direct comparison.
I’m curious what gauge wire they’re using 15k is right on the fence we’re you can make a good pickup with either gauge. My guess is that it’s 43awg whereas the JB and Roxy are 44awg which would mean the the eruption is likely hotter(more winds) just thicker wire. I’ll likely just pick one up.

It doesn’t come off as hotter than the Roxy. Just a little more “bounce” as you mentioned. It definitely has more squish in the mids. Or maybe perceived because of less lows and highs. But all that may be to the added tone pot.

I’ll be interested in what you find if you pick one up.

I don’t have the Roxy in any of my guitars at the moment. It’s an earlier design and it’s more immediate and articulate than my own personal playing preference. I am more of a fan of a bouncy feel under the fingers.

Anyone else played one of these?

I’m a big fan of the peavey Wolfgang pickups Jim designed and he told me these are the same design. Have one on the way to check out.

Bumping this back up.
Wondering how the Eruption would compare to the Wicked 8 in a basswood Pro Am. The W8 sounds great. The only thing I'd want for an improvement would be a bit more mid character. The W8 is quite balanced, in a balanced sounding basswood body. A bit more mid character would would make it pop more.

I do have the stock Anderson H3 I could install. I was tempted to try an EVH Wolfgang after hearing it in the 78 Eruption. Sweet pup, felt great, lots of mids, but it lacked the clarity of the ToneNerd pups.

I’ve since transformed this entire guitar. Sanded off the poly finish and added a single hum pickguard with a Manlius A2 Hot Rod 59’. No tone pot.
