Has anyone ever tried KT88 - 6550 in there diezel herbert amp? The herbert all ready has a shit load of bass are these to much or do they do wounders for the amp. THANKS.......

I think it would increase the headroom, and bass can always be dialed back.

I think that you mean too much bass for the cab connected to Herbert. Herbert has no problem dishing out massive bass to a cab.

And to answer your question correctly; installing any KT88 or 6550 power tubes in Herbert WILL NOT increase any bass, it will however increase much more compression and quite possibly (depending on how you dial it in) lose a good deal of articulation.

Going by memory I would not go with KT88s, the thing sounds monsterous already.

Ehh.... howcome ? I always thought KT88's and 6550's were more articulate than EL34's ?

Giga.

Me too. I thought 88s increase headroom and articulation over 34s.

either you or your ears are very misinformed ;)

More compressed. Try them and you be the judge - different strokes...

there may be less midrange than el 34`s but it will be rounder/ bigger sounding than el 34`s imo

That's been my experience also. I presently run 88s in my 2204 that had 34s in it. I find the 88s give me more headroom and low end oomph. The amp sounds much fuller at lower volumes. Crank the amp and it's like a 34 based amp on steroids. Just more of everything. I don't know. Maybe it's just my amp.

I would go out tonight, But I haven't got a stitch to wear.

that said, in my experience, and I have plenty with 6550's,

6550's =

1. more bass
2. more volume
3. more high end treble
4. slightly lower/flatter mids
5. less mush
6. less compression
7. more articulation

IMO, something like the Herbert doesn't necessarily need these properties.

When you say headroom you mean more volume?

By more headroom I mean the amp stays cleaner longer. 88s break up later than 34s. Right now I'm using my 2204 as a pedal platform so I run the amp clean and use pedals for dirt. I find I can get better OD tone at low (house friendly) levels. The 88s have more lower mids and bottom end fullness at lower volumes.

Turn up the amp and the 88s roar but things can get quite loud at that point.

Agree on all counts

If you have the money to throwdown on 6 tubes just to check it out, go for it. I would recommend the shuguang kt-88/90. I use that in my VHT. I've had several sets of those Shuguangs and never had one go bad. I've had a pair of wingedC kt88's and they coudnt handle the High voltage and bias of the VHT. The Sovtek kt88 is very rugged but seems to fold at high volume in my amp. I like the shuguangs.

I tried one pair of KT-88s and a quad of el34s. I thought it made the alot tighter. I only put them in briefly because I just wanted to hear it and the KT88s were from my D60.
