I can get the beginning where you pulloff the B string with your pinkie then the G string and then the move down the G string. But I can't figure out the slide after that intial move. It is the slide on the A string I just can't seem to get it. Any suggestions? I am using this youtube lesson to learn it. The main reason is this was my favorite 80's hair band tune and I just got a Blockhead Hand Grenade in trade and the tone coming out of this amp is identical to Warren's tone on this album. It is scary how close it sounds.

Thanks,

Chuck

There is no "trill" in the Lay It Down intro . . .

Link doesn't work either

I meant pull off. I have been trying to embed the youtube video but gave up so now the link works.

I had the damndest time trying to learn that riff back in the 80s' when I started playing.
I had all the chords memorized but never could get it to sound right.
Once I started to just play it with 'feeling' and not memorization it came together.
Just keep practicing it.....

Are you saying you can't physically do it, or didn't know the notes?

So you only hit the A string? I knew it was a slide from 5th to 7th but wasn't sure what strings to it. Also once I do the slide my timing gets thrown way off.

Just a straight slide from 5 to 7. A string only, then into the next chord.

Hit the "d" note then slide to the "e" note

Watching a video lesson can be tough sometimes. I would go to a Tab site and learn it from there. Its easier and can be done at your pace and you SEE what it being played on the notes not with someone playing it.
Just another idea.

Not that I can't do it physically just having a bitch of a time with the timing and making it sound right. It probably doesn't help that in my 9 years of playing I haven't taken much time to learn many songs. I have always just played my own stuff. I also didn't take up guitar until I was 32. I truly think it is much harder to learn an instrument when you are older. Not sure why but I think when you are younger you can pick stuff up much quicker. I played piano from age 6-12 and was very good but hated it. Always told my parents I wanted to play guitar but both my sisters played piano and they didn't want to go to another lesson so I was stuck with piano. I played keyboards in a local band in high school. Keyboard was sooo much easier than guitar. I gotta tell you when people say piano is a much harder instrument to learn than guitar they are full of shit. Guitar is the hardest thing I have ever done. That includes anything in my professional life or in sports. Accomplished guitar players do not get enough credit for what they truly are accomplishing. It truly amazes me when I hear and see great guitarist. That includes watching alot of members videos on this forum.

Think of it like d,E

duh (first note) nil (slide) DUH (the chord)

Thats how it was for me. I knew the notes but it didnt sound right.
Took a while to get that GROOVE/Feeling Demartini puts into it.
Still love playing that song!

You are so right but my ear sucks when trying to learn stuff. But your last post made alot of sense because I abandoned the youtube lesson after about 30 minutes and starting playing from memory and feel and it definitely started working. That is until the slide. I'll get it just gonna take some time. I just felt inferior because I spent at least an hour just trying to get the that first part right. I don't give up just get down on myself.

Christ I spent a couple weeks trying to learn that song when I was teen before i got it sounding right. I bought the Invasion of Privacy songbook and learned every song in it over a years time. Some great playing in that book.

Yeah I expect to get stuff to fast. Part of the equation is when you are 40 with 3 kids your time limited. So I try to get it down quickly when quickly is probably not an option. But you were probably learning that song from ear which to me is unbelievable because I don't think I could learn any song from ear. BTW I see you are in Michigan are you in the D. Love to get together sometime and play some music. I live in Bloomfield Hills and have a room full of amps. Let me know if you would ever like to jam together. I am sure you could teach me a ton of stuff.

Cool!
I live up in Saginaw. Also limited in time. 39 years old and 2 kids so I know what you mean.
I hate learning new stuff. We play about every weekend at my place but do alot of old metal and sometimes break out in 'new' stuff if I get off my ass and practice. Usually I get the feel for a song and then adlib.
What amps you got? I am a gear nut myself.
