What does RT have to say about these things? Thinking about going to a rack pre-amp type setup. I play ozzy/80's style stuff and I have an addiction to a lot of gain :aww:
 
I had one years ago, it was less than impressive, maybe there were issues with the one I had but I don't think so. Supposedly Zakk Wylde used these for awhile, mine never got close to a great sounding Marshall tone.
 
Apparently there's an interview floating around somewhere where Lee mentions it was based on a modded fender deluxe request that all of the hot players in CA were requesting at the time. He got tired of modding amps and decided to offer the mod in a pre-amp design.

Yes I have heard he was notorious for changing the pre-amp designs without stating so and trying different things on different ones. There's also the usual questionable reliability concerns that companies have mentioned they've seen.
 
I had a bunch of those Lee Ampeg heads 10-15 years ago. Loved the tone, but it did not bring the low end thunder. I imagine that rack with a decent power amp and your ISP sub might work well.
 
Bright, thin, a decent amount of gain... but not "high gain" by today's standards... and not built the best either. Somewhat popular due to
Alexi Laiho in CoB. Get an Engl E530... sounds better and better built.
 
A lot of these were floating around STL awhile back. I always found them really buzzy and shrill. I cannot comment on the build quality because I really don't know.

There are two versions of the preamp. The first run was Fender based and the second run Marshall based. I don't remember the specifics, but the back panel of the preamp differed between the two versions regarding the output/xlr jacks.
 
I had the modded Fender style model (1987) briefly and it was nice for what it was. Kind of like a better early Mark series preamp but without a graphic EQ.
 
I also had a bunch of Lee Jackson's amps over the years. Generally speaking they are not what most of us would call high gain, all of the ones I had seemed reliable. When I get to my pc I'll look for pictures and post them if I find them. I would not pay much for one.
 
Rocktron Prophecy, GSP1101, or even a JMP-1 might be better choices.

I almost bought one when i had my TS-100 power amp. They do sound damn good!
 
My buddy has a few Ampeg vl502s. He got some good recorded tones with them.
 
I bought one when they first came out because Akira Takasaki from Loudness was endorsing it. It sounded great through my 1972 Marshall but it ate tubes like crazy. It has mucho gain and once warmed up and dialed in, it's O.K. I traded mine for a Taylor 314 acoustic.
 
I use an Engl 530 with a Marshall EL34 50/50.
The Marshall gives it punch and oomph galore. Granted, it ain't no Recto/Uber, but it's a pretty versatile preamp, and face it: Live in a noisy rock environment, NOBODY notices that you're playing an affordable preamp into a used power amp. It sounds good, period.

I haven't tried the LJ, but it can be heard on the first Children of Bodom albums.
