I usually change them once a year. They are thick.

Thicker strings might not break as easy, but they muddy things more than thin strings because of their huge low end, so to me the highend loss is even worse

Why again do we "break in" Speakers to get rid of the harsh high end then?

point taken, but i tend to like a bright frontend for clarity. it makes a huge difference if the brightness is added pre or post preamp/distortion.
