Ok so honestly, could you tell where the breaks are in the first segment? Hearing with your eyes is pretty common. Let me know in the comments. I wanted to see if I could tell a difference on the mic between two guitars that couldn't be more different- an ESP Hanneman, NTB, alder, EMG 81 vs. a Les Paul Custom '68 RI, mahogany with a maple cap and '68 Custom PUPs. While these two guitars give a different experience in the room, would it matter in a mix??I used my most expressive amp- my Mesa Mark IIC++ on the rhythm channel, as well as my most expressive cab- my Marshall 1960TV loaded with Greenbacks. Also chose a mid-gain riff to help keep it dynamic. All mic'd with an E609 and double tracked L/R.

I noticed when it switched back to guitar 1 form guitar 2 the first time before knowing. From then on I figured the one with the heftier low end chunk was the LP.

Playing it back knowing, there’s a noticeable difference in output from the pickups but first time through could’ve chalked it up to variations on playing.

Could hear the difference big time in the palm mutes. The first guitar was tight and hits a little hard. Second guitar felt like it had a drop off in overall aggression, especially in the palm mutes. I guessed 1 ESP and 2 as the LPC. My LPC came with the 498t/480r set and I'm thinking about popping an EMG 81/85 setup in there. The stock pickups are stinky in these LPCs.

I'd throw the bar on that Hanneman and go to town on Slayer....what it was meant for imo

I think it'd be close to nil in a mix.

That said, I do think the EMGs are a little faster & the Customs a little slower on the attack.
I liked the detail of the mids (maybe?) more on the customs, but the EMG lows would be my preference in a mix.

How loud/where was the master set for the recordings? How loud was it in the room to get that tone via the mic? Cool test, thanks for doing it!

I do think the Customs have slightly better detail, but man in my studio monitors I really have to listen for it.

I set up all my recordings starting with the level at the cab +/- 100 dB, then dial the preamp input to around -6 dB. Then, since louder is always "better" when comparing, I'll level match in post. I also added a basic HPF / LPF, it was actually pretty woofy without it. This TV cab really moves air.

The impetus for this test was I got some new cabs & had to test & mark where the ideal mic placement is. I know that mic movements as small as 1/4" can really impact recorded tone, and when we're playing live I want to know for sure where to put the mic so that my stage sound settings are reliably replicated at FOH.

much appreciated, room volume wise, walls shaking volume to get the tone on these recordings or what?

Of course I can, one is an LP, another is a Superstrat!
