I see so much Lynch, EVH, Aldrich etc etc worship in here but almost zero chatter about Paul Gilbert. 80's super hero? Check, immense skills? Check, lots of gear nerding? Check... he passes the RT checklist so let's bring the Gilbert fans into play here.

I will begin by posting a couple of my favorites.

This guy is and always will be my favorite player

Not my favorite but definitely an unbelievable player. For someone with his skills and fame a great teacher as well.

LOVE watching Paul play. Nice to see someone who clearly has fun while blowing peoples minds. He always looks happy when playing. Such a talent. I agree about his tone. never thought it was that great but with those chops, who gives a darn?

I think his tone got immensely better when he jumped on the Marshall train with Satch. He's a joy to watch, I jam Mr. Big on the regular, nastiest of the Nasty guitar licks !

Have to agree on the tone thing but maybe it's because his hearing is beyond shot. Dude has everything but the toanz.... He even writes some killer lyrics. I thought green tinted sixties mind was pretty damn awesome. A must see is this video here of him playing what seems to be off the cuff VH....

His tone on Second Heat was shrill and still better than the fuzzy hairy mess of tone he uses these days

The fact that he started playing the fireman was a little underwhelming but when he started going all single coil in his guitars his tone became a little cringe worthy. But I mean, when I listen to either of the videos I posted, I have no issues with the tone in those. His rhythm tone isn't my thing but his lead tone has always been nice.

He's just plain fantastic if u ask me. Seems like a cool dude too.

He's brilliant, everything he touches is gold. Sometimes the tone can be a bit grating but that is his style and he makes it work. Sick arpeggios and runs on this guy. He just seems to have it all and puts it together to play for the song when he needs to, or the guitar nerds when he wants to. I really dug the Mr. Big stuff, had melody and hooks.

I love PG. Huge fan. His videos where he shows how to play each song from some of his newer stuff are really good. I'm a tone chaser like the rest of us but as weird as it may sound I'm actually inspired by the fact that his tone isn't godlike. I love the fact that he picks up his guitar and melts your face off even with crappy sound (and I agree it has gotten better lately). My only bitch is someone in Paul's position should just hire great singers to sing his songs and he should stop singing.

he's a really nice guy and his precision is beyond.

i also wish he would get his hands on a fatter sounding amp. carol ann or mesa come to mind. even a cameron which has plenty of gain like paul seems to adore, but with more girth and brown ness.

The thing that makes him so awesome is that he really loves playing guitar. He's always so happy when playing or teaching. I'll bet he's the nicest guy out there.

I liked when he was using Laney Amps.

Gilbert is my guitar inspiration; however I'm not interested in what he's doing now. Loved goomy album. He has matured. I have not. I'm much more interested in stealing Ideas from Russ Parrish these days.

Didn't he use DiMarzio SDs in parallel instead of series so his picking wouldn't be all wooly and hairy messy ? That's why he sounds thin, the pick ups in parallel do not sound thick like in series...

I think his tone fits his style but I agree I'm not a fan of his tone. Fantastic player and definitely a nice guy to boot.
