Line6 M13 or pedals?

I know everyone hears things differently but my m13 doesn't mess with my tone at all. I have my main board that has the m13 and all my fuzz\overdrive pedals on it and another board that has seperate pedals. I can't hear a difference in the two. Personally I don't like the distortion section of the m13 but really dig the reverb, delay, and modulation stuff. Setting up different scenes so a different sound is just one button away is also handy. I also dig the tuner and the fact I can use the expression pedal to mess with things.

To me it's much simpler to use the m13 than my board with the seperate effects since I can hit one button for multiple effects (still have to change amp channels but no biggie) instead of stepping on three pedals. I realize that you can get slightly better sound quality with individual pedals but so far for what I do and once you get a band playing I am more than pleased with the m13. A ton of pro's use them on their boards so they are good enough for my humble needs.

Yet again, another differing opinion from someone with actual use in place. Many thanks for your opinion! It is appreciated and yes...you are right...at the end of the day, it's a stretch if anyone in the audience can tell the difference. There are things on it that I like. One of the main ones that interests me is the pitch glide effect. I'd like to know if it tracks chords as well as my Whammy DT does. If I was to get the M13, I could really be saving myself some $$$ in the process. I just wish Line6 weren't such buffoons and put a USB into it so you could edit it on the computer. That would have been great!

I have not been a fan of the 4CM for hooking anything up in the past. I always wondered with the effects loop on it....couldn't I technically just run the send and return on the M13 to the send and return on my amp and then put the effects pre/post so to speak?

Good stuff! :)

I use the 4cm myself and it works well but both of my amps have really good loops (Fryette Sig X and a Budda Superdrive 30). Not sure if what you want to do would work or not but you can setup the m13 to be true bypass and it seems to be very transparent to me. To me the m13 does a great job of modeling pedals which it is supposed to, if you are looking for more studio type effects than look elsewhere. I personally chose it over the TC Nova System because I like the personality of the pedals better than a pristine studio sound. You may have a different experience.

From the player's perspective, I think the biggest issue is that we compare the Line 6 stuff to other well known, or boutique stand alone pedals. The Line 6 stuff has a sound that is a bit individual, despite the engineer's efforts to digitally clone the most popular pedals. The Line 6 stuff that I've used sounded good, it just didn't sound exactly like other pedals I owned, or had experience with, that it was modeled on. From the listener's perspective, I doubt if there is any discernible difference.

My problem with the M13 was that I still had to tap dance. I much prefer an all in one unit that changes everything at once...I have presets that will have chorus, OD, delay and reverb and then need to go to a lead volume boost with a different delay, less verb and octave for example. Can't do that with the m13 unless you're Fred Astaire.

Sure you can. There is no problem setting up one button patches in scene mode.

To the OP.... I used one for a good while along with a few pedals for tones or FX I was picky about. IMHO I think the M13, M9, or M5 can be a good addition to add effects that you may not be as picky about but would like to have. I actually I think the sounds out of the M's are pretty good and it was never my experience as others have said where I thought it colored my tone in a negative way when off or on. Honestly it was more transparent than other multi units I've had.

After getting a Tyler Variax for a 2nd guitar I just got a PODHD 500 to replace the M13 and still happy with that and some other outboard pedals.

Which Variax did you get? American or MIK? How's the "tracking" when it comes to baritone tunings? I tried a 69 at GC, but the set up sucked, and it wasn't properly intonated, which I think really caused issues the lower the tunings went.

I got the JTV 69 MIK. After a good set up it's a very very decent guitar. I actually like the real pups in it and it resonates well.

The tracking and feel is better than when I was trying to use a Whammy DT for baritone tones using regular tuned guitars. The main negative is the palm mutes, while they got better with the last firmware, they are still a bit weird to get used to. The JTV is not perfect in feel but since I don't always play tuned down like that.... it works for when I do.

BTW they are coming out with new software for the JTV's MIA and MIK that are supposed to take the modeled tones to the "HD" level.... so maybe the differences will diminish more or maybe not. :D

With the same guitars? That's impressive if it doesn't require a whole new guitar for a higher res model from new firmware.

Yep all the JTV's. I'm pretty sure that the old models that aren't the Tyler made ones wont be able to upgrade.

hmmm....mine must have been broken then. I did get scenes to work but it was too limited for what I wanted. You can only use one effect per column(bank) at a time right? There were instances where I needed more....like 4 effects out front and 2 in the loop...it couldn't do that. It also had too many effects that I would never ever use...all those zany effects that sound silly or cartoon-like.

Yeah you are limited to 4 effects per scene.... I didn't realize that you needed more than 4 FX at once.

That was the main drawback for me. I had to add extra pedals in and still had to tap dance. Otherwise, it's a great unit...the effects sound really good, especially at the price point.
