Well I was playing around with my Vado HD (thanks Mark for the tip) - just trying it out etc.

No special playing here, just sound checking through the channels of both amps, turned out a mini shootout (same cab, guitar, room and recording setup used).

Obviously, as this is a home recording, the amps are not really at working/gigging volume:

Steavens Poundcake:

Bogner 100B:

Watcha reckon, which one wins?

It all depends what kind of stuff you will be playing....for me its the Bogner that wins...but thats me.

Yeah, I also have to admit, there is a slight unfairness, in that the Steavens recording volume was lower. That amp needs to be turned up a bit to open up in brightness and character.

For me it is the Bogner. It sounds much more crisp on the top end which I like. I'm sure the Steavens is a great amp but I like the voicing better on the 100B.

That first amp sounded like a SLO clone. Maybe you should try the real SLO instead.

A Diezel eats them both for breakfast :D

How about an A/B Box or even a Tonebone Headbone?

Shush, don't let them know our secret. ;)

I liked the Bogner much more on every setting. Especially the clean and low to mid gain sounds. Wasn't digging them on the Steavens, but as stated before, maybe it needed to be turned up a bit.

Thanks for your totally neutral advise Olaf

Well, playing them a bit more tonight I gotta say they are both great amps. The Steavens opens up a lot when it's a bit louder. And it seems to like G12T75s, at least sounds great with a standard 1960 cab in our rehearsal studio.

But indeed that 100B is an animal of its own. Gets really mean and big when it's loud. If only the loop wouldn't be so problematic at times.

To me, the Bogners always have that thick screamin at you through glowing glass tone and quality.

Sadly a lot of tube amps really don't sound that "tube like" anymore, making me look in the back just to make sure they are really there and working.

hard to tell.

liked the Bogner clean more, but pretty sure i liked the gain more on the Steavens.

I agree with this...but it's close. I'm sure a 101B with EL34's would sound much better than both of them

To me the Steavens wins easily. The top end on the Bogner sounds too dull, lifeless and muffled. The midrange is really nice though. The Steavens just has a much more clear sounding chime to it than the Bogner does. The clean on the Bogner just sucks. No other way for me to say it. Overall the poundcake is a more clear, less muddy sound. I dig!

You know it's funny, I thought the exact same thing about the Bogner. Is it even a tube amp? They do so much signal filtering between gain stages it doesn't sound much like a tube amp anymore.

Interesting the XTC classic I have does not make me feel that way at all. It just goes to show you each of us hear so many things in so many different ways.

The XTC is one of the best sounding amps I've ever played. Definitely sounds like magical tubes at work! You should check one out in person.
