What irks me about a good number of live albums is when they add tracks later. The Kiss Alive albums and G'N'R Live Era are too that come to mind that I know that did this.

I remember listening to Alive I and II as a kid and hearing Paul Stanley's voice simultaneously sing backup behind his lead voice and think, "Man, how does he DO that?!" :D They're both still great albums for what they are.

Older: Rush - "All the World's a Stage". This is Lifeson at his rawest and best IMHO.

Newer: Extreme - "Take us Alive". Nuno tearing it up. If you're a Nuno fan, get the DVD!

In general, I prefer live albums because of how raw and energetic they are. My favorite official lives are:

Rush - All the World's a Stage, Exit Stage Left, and Rio
Maiden - Live After Death
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Queensryche - Operation:Livecrime
Dokken - Beast from the East
Aerosmith - A Little South of Sanity

Other stuff that has had to go the bootleg route because there isn't a good official release -
Bon Scott era AC/DC
Black Sabbath
ZZ Top

+1 on all the posts!...I too like when a band takes a song in a different direction live, and the rawness of earlier live albums...(when it came out)-My first live album was Rushs' "all the worlds a stage" ...didnt even know who they were, but thought the cover looked really cool so I bought it!...One of my favorite bands ever since!

UFO Strangers & Frampton for sure.

Don't forget "LIVE BULLET" Bob Seger. Recorded sept 1975 from a two night stint at Cobo Hall in Detroit. Totally "live"...no overdubs or tricks...all Bob & Punch did was basically mix it. Features many of Bob's very early tunes from before he hit it big-time. Track 15 is a song recorded a year later in Pontiac, and they added it to the recently released remastered version of LB.

1 Nutbush City Limits
2 Travelin' Man
3 Beautiful Loser
4 Jody Girl See
5 I've Been Working
6 Turn The Page
7 U.M.C.
8 Bo Diddley
9 Ramblin' Gamblin' Man
10 Heavy Music
11 Katmandu
12 Lookin' Back
13 Get Out of Denver
14 Let It Rock
15 I Feel Like Breaking up Somebody's Home

Great mentions everyone! Some I totally forgot about. Awesome. I wish Van Halen would have dropped one around Fair Warring era. I have some bootlegs but nothing with any great production value. I would have loved to hear a live show from Schenker with Graham Bonnet too

Ozzy Speak of The devil
Tribute
Live After Death Maiden
Alice Cooper Show
Tokyo Tapes Scorps
Unleashed in the East Priest
Kiss Alive
This list pretty much nails it for me. I would add Frampton Comes Alive, Lizzy's Live and Dangerous, Scorps World Wide Live, and Cheap Trick's Budokan.

Big fan of REO's Live "you get what you Play for" ..not to be compared with the awful radio pop band they became..this stuff was pure 70's
guitar rock!!

KISS ALIVE

UFO- Strangers

and

Priest - Unleashed

were pretty much studio recordings with crowds dubbed in by the time they went to the stores

I know it's all been said...

UFO-Strangers in the night
Motorhead-No sleep til hammersmith
Scorpions-Tokyo tapes
Pat Travers-Go for what you know
