I really dig the Cruiser. Not sure it's all that vintagey, but it's really good.

Assuming for a strat....Custom Shop 69's. I've used a bunch and these are my favorite for blues.

I'd look into some anderson single coils. I played another forumites Anerson strat through a Marshall slp and the tones were just killer

Check out BKP's... Ask Tim Mills regarding the wood of your ax (body, neck, fingerboard) and what you're looking for and he'll get something sorted for you.

They're great. I don't understand people recommending these boutique pups for blues.

Suhr Fletcher/Landaus are just incredible. My favourite pickup.

I have a Wilde noiseless pickups in my strat

Super affordable, and I like it alot over the stock pickups that came with the American standard. Well balanced imo. Maybe not quite as much bite, but to me, its just right. I found I had to dial back the tone knob with the stock pickups as they were really stinkin bright and brittle. These work well for a variety of stuff.

I am sure there are better ones though.

Greg Lollar Strat Specials are what I put in my 94 Strat, maple plank. The neck pup is the great one. Slightly more of a bell tone than the stock, it rings but with a little less scratch. Nash Custom Guitars (around 2K$) use Lollar Hybrid sets, it has the Strat Special pup in the bridge position. Slightly less quack but a little more edge. The mid and neck give some good Dire Straitsish tones. There is Trower to be found in there too. My idea of a great single coil is one going into a class A tube amp, power amp distortion, and a little verb and maybe that slight ammount of delay so you barely know its there. I took my Lollar equipped Strat to a shop to try a few Matchless amps. Addictive tone. Tried a few other strats just for shits and grins. The Lollars are up to the hype. If you want a vintage strat with a little smoother output that is great for touch dynamic playing, they are worth a look.

I'll second this, although not my fave, the FL's are pimp.

I am not an expert on singles but from the guys that mention these pups I would no doubt try them.

Lots of folks dig the Duncan Antiquities for that type of music.

I would say give Wade at Motorcity pickups a call since his singles are great, but prob a little pricey for what you are looking for.

I've heard lot's of very positive reviews of the plain old Duncan SSL-1's. You can add an SSL-5 at the bridge for a bit more beef if necessary.

What about the rio grande sets ????
I have heard they are awesome. Scott Splawn has the rio grande PUPs in stock.
He is a dealer, last I remember.

I would look into Dimarzio, they have some great pickups for a good price!!!

Whatever you do get noiseless, that is one problem they have fixed since 1950. The best sounding ones I have played are the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues.

VV Heavy Blues is a GREAT pickup--I have this pickup installed in one of my Strats and LOVE it!

The Cruiser neck is an awesome, authentic Strat-sounding pickup as well if you can get past the modern look. Virtual Solo is great for bridge position, and either '54 Pro or anything in the True Velvet line sounds great.

Check out my sound clips and official review on Jemsite.com:

If you'd like clips of the other pickups PM me and I'll get some out to you--I have some recorded but I'll have to upload them to my web site and link to them.

Cheers,

My favorite single coils for blues are the Lindy Fralin Blues Specials, and the Suhr FL's. You really can't go wrong with either set. Very punchy, slightly overwound, big percussive tone with no shrill highs. And they're not expensive! The Fender Custom Shop 69's mentioned are pretty cool too, they just lack a little bit of the nice mids the others have....at least in my opinion. For noiseless the DiMarzio Area series are good, and the Kinmans are great. But they are still one notch under the Fralins and Suhrs I mentioned. Just my two cents!

I like Rio Grande singles a lot. That'd be the first place I'd go. I haven't tried a lot of single coils though. I like G&L singles too.

I really like Custom Shop 54s. They sound warm and fat without losing a sweet top end.

IME, any noiseless pickup I've tried has been lacking something on the high end. They just don't sound quite right to me.
