I am checking into new computers to record and edit music with and am looking to spend $1500 or less. The Macs have got my attention.
Any recommendations? I've read reviews that the macbook pros are good enough and others say go with an IMac.
Right now portability is not a major issue.
I would be open to a Windows based computer system as well.

You can buy a good Mac Pro from 2008 and up. It has 4 bays for extra drives and you can fit a 5th one on top of the DVD player. Make sure you get the most powerful one you can afford and load it up with as much Ram as you can. The 2009 2.98Gg 8 core or a 2010 2.66Ghz 12 core or higher are really good and you can find one at a good price. You'll need a couple of drives for audio. At least 7,200 rpm with 64mb cache and don't use the system drive for audio. You could also build a PC which will be more current but the price will depend on what processor and motherboard you buy.

A 2012 Mac Mini i7 is still the best bang for your buck computer for recording. Quad core, user replaceable RAM, available with 2 internal hard drives, thunderbolt, firewire, USB 3, etc. Just a great workhorse computer perfect for audio work. The new (2014) models are only dual core and have soldered RAM that can't be upgraded...a definite downgrade from the previous model.
