Damn! That's one clean '73. The truss-rod cover and near pristine case were the things that made me question it. $4800.00 still seems a bit steep to me, but I guess it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay. I didn't see that's came form Gary's, so of-course it would be legit.

Looks legit to me. But, if you are interested, request a closer photo of the serial number and run it at Gibson. However, that is way too much for that guitar in today's environment.

The guitar looks right to me, I have played a 70s custom once, a guy in my home area owns one, it looked similar. I don't think that guitar was partiularly great though (the one I played). Maybe Gibson didn't build such a great guitar in the 70s after all. And for that price range, there would be other guitars I'd be after.

Checking the seller feedback of the guy wouldn't suggest he is eager to kill his ebay reputation. He sold a few high $$$ items in the past.

Email Gibson. I almost bought a Chinese knock off. There are always a few minor details on the guitar that are not 100% right, and the guys at Gibson are great at spotting them, and they will get back to you really fast

Something's not sitting right with the headstock/neck. The volute looks awkward - in fact, totally wrong.

Neck and inlays are off too.

Was this a replacement neck??

this looks good to me. Chinese fakes are usually fairly easy to spot.

The case looks brand new... the whole guitar does really. I dunno.

I'm telling ya, the rear of where the headstock and neck meet is all wrong. I feel like this is a replacement neck and that's why the inlays look off too. The headstock and tuners look right, albeit I am unfamiliar with the gold tulips. The binding on the ax itself is bang on, the volume/tone knobs are looking good. But the neck/headstock back, I do believe, ought to be reverse V'd down the back on the neck - not just cut off horizontally and scooped.

Do you have any Les Pauls?

Oh... Why yes you do

I agree the fakes have to be almost perfect. How else would they fool anyone..

There's just something odd about it. The pickup covers don't look right with the wide corners on them. I don't ever recall seeing Gibson covers like that? Maybe it's just the lighting.

Price is way too high. Also for me when I bought my '73 LP custom, I liked that fact that it had some wear, it meant it had been played. Too pristine just makes me think that its not a great guitar.

Here is a picture of 2 '73 LP customs, one is mine, the other is a friends. They were made within about 12 weeks of each other if memory serves me right.

The devil is in the details.

Notice the biding on the back of the guitar right by the neck joint. You will find the the 45 degree angle cut where the binding meets. This looks right.

The waffle back tuners used from 68-73 makes me think its authentic.

Verify the serial and call up who he bought it from.

You back from self exile in the classifieds already?

I'm no Gibson expert, but I have played a bunch of them. That volute does look Fucked up, never seen one like it, the rest looks about right though.

The chinese fakes can look quite close, and even the serial numbers line up. If you email Gibson they can tell you the production details about the guitar that serial number matches, but even that is not a 100% way to tell that it is authentic. The fake I almost bought had a serial number that matched the finish. One of the big flags was that it did not fit perfectly in the Gibson case, and it did not play that good. The people at Gibson got back to my email in about a day, and were able to point out that it is a fake. They go after the people selling fakes more agressivly than my dog with a bone.
