Just how long did this supposed "tryout" occur I wonder? Did you read the manual?
2-3 months for me. I read the online manual, beginner tips, much of the wiki page, and browsed the Fractal forum before the amp arrived. I tried out, meaning tweaked, tweaked, mixed IRs, and tweaked some more for the whole time I owned it. I agree with just about everything he wrote.

which firmware? the newest one is supposed to be realer than the ones that were supposed to be the realist.

at the rate these realer updates are going, we should expect tube amps to sound fake soon.

I cry a single tear every time I play mine, :D

I can't stand that digital hi-mid sheen of that unit...

It could be the guys with the clips you've heard, could be your speakers, could be your environment, could be your ears....just rest assured that something, somewhere, isn't dialed in right.

So far every clip I've heard had that. Believe me, it will only make me happier if it doesn't really have it.
I did a Van Halen style clip with my Axe awhile ago and told everyone it was my Mojave PeaceMaker - not one person thought it was a digital unit and 99.99% thought it was a great sounding, screaming 100W cranked amp. That is, of course, until I revealed it was the Axe... funny how that works...

I'm purposely using analog components to achieve "digital hi-mid sheen" in the amp I'm building so it sounds less realer...

Steve

I'd like to listen to your clip.

... and I do know how it works, unfortunately that's not the case.

reasonable? reasonable would be save the cash - run a bandit 112 with a G-major and pocket over $1,500

the axe-fx is overrated - and for $2,000 - the above recommendation is much more reasonable at the volumes you will be playing :D

Im curious if youve owned one? With some tweaking the unit is amazing and well worth it for what nbarts needs it for. If youve owned one then great your intitiled to your opnion but ive come to the conclusion that hating the axe fx has become a common thread on this forum, And i think its Bullshit as most of the people that rag on it wont give it the light of day. Its a amazing unit but some people like to read forums and make judgements then to try stuff out themselves.

ive played one.

tweaking is not what i enjoy for one, secondly it has no balls, punch, thump, rattle the organs in your chest/make you say wow, and 3 - i didnt like the feedback from it - the give and take a regular tube preamp has when moderately cranked. it felt like i was playing a modeler, which ironically is exactly what it is. not only do you have to spend countless hours dialing in modeled tones that sound great, it still "felt" like i was playing my vypyr, only with more menues, more choices, and better modeling tone - but also $1600 more expensive. i dont believe the tonal difference is worth it by a long shot.

why would i make such a strong judgement without playing one? at $2,000 my expectations bar and critiquing level goes sky high. like i said before, it is grossly overrated on this forum. it is good at modeling, and that is all it is good at. nothing else... :)
You are completely off base here. Number one, you say it is good at modeling and nothing else. Please!! - I would pay the price just for the incredible digital effects you get from the unit. It is easily the equal of far more expensive Eventide units and far easier to setup. In my W/D/W setup with my Egnater amp, VHT power amp and cabs, it sounds simply incredible as an effects unit.

Additionally, I assure you that if you came to my house and listened to my presets (created with never more than an hour or so of tweaking), through my VHT power amp volumed UP and my stereo 4x12, I assure you the tone you'd hear would have plenty of balls, punch, thump, rattle the organs in your chest/make you say wow. And this is from a guy that loves real tube amps and will still continue to use them. The Axe is just another tool - it is fine with me that it isn't for everybody (neither is any particular tube amp) - but to dismiss it outright as nothing more than a good modeler is ridiculous...

It delivers the goods for me... period...

maybe not, but I listen to a lot of clips and I can't tell real amps from the Axe many times based just off a recorded clip. Look at samhill - every clip he posts sounds pretty much identical to me tonewise, no matter if he's playing through the Axe or one of his real amps.

Yeah, but even though it'll be better, you might have to adjust your "presets".
