Man, Yoeri! You're rig has sure taken a drastic change in the past 1 and a half. I would love to hear how this sounds. How would you compare this to your previous Engl Savage rig? Why do you prefer it?
Yeah, my rig has completely changed since July 2006. First of all, I got the Masotti (not in the pic) around that time which BLEW me away. It had all the tones I needed and wanted and simply is an amazing multi-channel amp. I also discovered the Lenders cabs that I´m now using. For me they are simply the best 2x12s out there and I owned or played almost all of them. So the Masotti became my main amp and I sold my Savage 120 later that year.
Early 2007 I picked up a Carr Slant 6v for my blues/bluesrock gig. I really liked that amp a lot. Couple of months later I decided to sell my Savage SE as I was not playing it anymore. As great as the Carr sounded, I never could make it totally work in a band/gigging situation, mostly because I was stuborn to run it with my rack setup (for ODs and some fx). During the summer of 2007 I traded an ESP Vintage Plus stratocaster for an Engl Slowhand Motion limited edition version of the Blackmore. I also still own that amp. The Masotti is still my main gigging amp for my coverband gigs.
Late last year, I finally gave up on the Carr, fantastic clean, ok sounding overdrive channel and shitty loop. Now, throughout the years, I played the CAE 3+SE preamp several times and it simply sounds amazing. It has all you need, great clean, killer crunch and fat lead. I never owned one for several reasons. When I sold the Carr, a friend of mine decided to sell his CAE and I decided that now was the time. I bought the Advance power amp 2nd hand Italy, had it checked at Advance (Italian company) and then send to me. The combination is awesome sounding. It´s all you could need for a coverband and running some pedals into the clean channel OR using the crunch channel, it is great for blues and bluesrock stuff as well.
Which one do I prefer? I´m equally happy using either and they both are a step up from the Engls I owned and loved. Had the Sav 120 for 7 years, the Sav SE for 5.5 so that says a lot about how I liked them. The Masotti sounds a bit darker in the mids although I can come close to mimic the crunch on the CAE. The CAE sits so well in the mix, the Masotti on the other hand reacts a bit differently. For the last 2 weeks, I have been swapping between them and love them both equally, they just deliver similar killer tones in a different way. I still like the Engl heads and the Slowhand I now have is probably the best sounding Engl I have ever played/owned for my kinda style. It sounds more organic than the other Engl amps, very cool.
I also bought a couple of new guitars last year and sold some old stuff. Basically, my entire rig has changed and I did not own any of the main ingredients before mid 2006
