Love Pedal Pedals?

Guys, boutique pedals are fun and everything, but when I think about how much money I've dropped in the past couple years on these things, I realize I could've had a third or half of a Marsha paid for. It's like heroin; the chase is always better than the destination. Actually there is no destination. You never catch the dragon!!!

Seriously, I really do love my Eternity and my BB+ and my fuzz pedals, but all the TS clones and variations will only get you a tiny change of sound in the long run. Buy one or two nice booteek pedals if you have to and then just grab some solid MXR's or even some Boss pedals.

FWIW, the last pedal I bought was an MXR Classic Overdrive (chinese made copy of GT-OD and exclusive at GC. Only $29.00!) and it's honestly the pedal I use most for boosting now. It just has the right sound for boosting and even sounds decent with the gain turned up through a clean channel. Put cost/value or collector status aside and just for plain usefulness and tone I'd keep my Classic OD over my OCD. :dunno: The BB or BB+ is hard to beat as is a good 808 type pedal.

Well if the Kanji 9 would only end up being slightly different than an OD808 would, that would save like 50 bucks. But then again, the Kanji 9 seems to offer a lot more control and diversity. And the Kanji Eternity is only a little bit more than an OD808. Hmmm. decisions decisions.

In terms of boutique stuff, I do intend to eventually get a Mad Professor Sweet Honey OD (again the CB version, handwired is way too expensive). That is one pedal I have not seen another pedal match

Yeah, I'd still go for the Kanji. Like I said, I love my Eternity and it is very useful and sounds great. It completely destroys my TS9, although they have slight similarities. If you get a Maxon 808 and maybe the Kanji or an Xotic BB, you'll be in business! (depending on the tones you're after of course.)
You can cover a lot of ground with those pedals, and sound great doing it. But to buy od after od because it has new this or new that and a toggle to select blah, blah, blah....Honestly they all start sounding the same at some price point.
But I'd take a Lovepedal TS clone over a TS9 or cheaper TS any day. The Maxon 808 however is perfect and a must have. The MXR GT-OD would also fill that gap.

Watched the Kanji 9 demo on PGS. meh. Sounds good, but I'm not wooed or anything. You'll only use one position on each of those toggles and you know it, and it's probably the positions that make it sound closer to a standard TS for. And for only $50 more! That's my opinion anyway.

You're probably right. But I dunno. I wish PGS wasn't the only dealer that got to have the Kanji pedals. I'd like to actually try one out in person, preferably right next to an OD808.

Buy one and send it to me, I'll be a side by side comparison for you

The Eternity (whatever version I have, not sure) is the one pedal I own that I can't just leave on one setting. It really does sound fantastic no matter how you set it, short of having the 'glass' control all the way up (it gets just a tiny bit harsh dimed, but nothing like a shitty TS9  ) Some days I run it as a clean boost, and others with everything set at noon. Lately I've been diming the gain and keeping the volume and glass at about 10:00. It has a great bouncy, addictive feel and is just a blast to play. I can't say the same for most of the tubescreamers or TS clones that I've played. Can't speak for the Kanji, but the Eternity is an amazing pedal.

Sounds like a fun pedal  How does it compare in use to your OCD?

I said somewhere above in that jumbled mess that I typed, that I really only like the OCD in one setting. Gain low and volume and tone around noon (tone varies depending on amp's brightness).

The OCD is kind of a love/hate pedal for me. It sounds so good when set like I described, but when you crank the gain it just turns to mush and gets fuzzy. It doesn't have the "singing buttery mids" that my Eternity or BB+ have either. So when I crank the OCD and go for a huge lead, it's just not there.

The good things about the OCD are that it retains a very amp like tone/feel/response when the gain is set low. You don't lose any low end when you kick it on. It is great for mild gain, sparkly chords and just feels good to play. But for me it's a set and forget type pedal, and I always am tempted to twist knobs and pull sounds from it that just are not there.

There is a shop here in Denver that is like paradise when it comes to pedals, so I'll have to go down there soon for a little shoot out. They should have at least certain versions of the love pedal stuff there

OCD version 4 is da bomb...not version 1, version 2 or version 3.

But it's best to own them all, because they can all serve a different purpose.

I'll jump right on that

How bout a 1 year bump. :D

So is it true that the Lovepedal Amp 11 is a clone of the Tim pedal? It sure does sound like it on some video's I've watched. I know there's dozens of threads on TGP but I don't feel like searching through them.

So, is it all just another Church Of Hype? :D

I find that if I spend enough time listening around and I think I like something, then when I finally get it..I still like it. There's way too many variables to ask about what's good. Taste, gear, pickups, etc. The choice is up to your ears really, not everyone else's.

My personal choice would be the Lovepedal Kalmazoo. It's the only one I have liked. I wouldn't toss around info about Lovepedal any more than I would say "I had a Peavey and didn't like it."

To me, the Kalamazoo in every demo I have seen (most anyway) is one of the nicest sounding out there. Could be a taste thing, I am out of the 80s hair band generation but appreciate a good Vinnie Moore album without screaming Yngwie type shrilliness or any of that kind of scratchy screamy thing.

The only reason I don't have one is I just haven't felt the need to switch from a cheap tubescreamer knockoff because I like my (pickups, guitar, preamps, etc; etc. and it everything works so why change it?)

I played with a Kalamazoo for a while. Nice little pedal there.

I've never used a pedal into a clean channel for anything passed slight-breakup. That is what the Kalamazoo was good at in my opinion. That and adding just a little something to the distortion of the amp. Pedals like the riot, etc that are supposed to give you amp-quality distortion just never sound right to me.
