Man, if Jim from Scumback ever caught wind of this thread, he'd murder me!   I'm basically saying that I have champagne tastes on a beer budget. :D

And you think I haven't been watching... :gethim: LOL

If you look at the Silver Bell, it's a 40 oz magnet, so more magnet than the M75, but less than the H75. It's also going to wind up somewhere in between on tone characteristics. Nothing wrong with it. I've already done custom speakers for a well known player with the 40 oz mag, but with the 75 hz cone & large dust cap. He's got other speaker company affiliations, so I'm not revealing his name....sorry.

Since I'm basically recreating the old Greenback G12M and G12H's with my M75 and H75, going with this magnet type wasn't what I focused on. While my Scumnico uses a 40 oz Alnico magnet with a neodymium tip (to bump up the alnico mag's power a bit), it's more like a 43-44 oz magnet for power, right in between the M75 and H75, but with the unique alnico midrange.

But I'll tell you what Ted said to me when I asked him how he felt when people bought Scumbacks after buying his, and then put the Webers up for sale...

"Jim, I'm not bothered in the least, you know why? I sold 8 speakers, not just four." Meaning he sold 4 of the Webers then sold four more to me to replace the ones he sold previously.

Ted was pretty practical as a businessman, as you can tell. So try them out if you want to.

That was a total class response in my opinion. I tip my hat to you sir. I can't wait until I become employed again and can order up a M75 and H75.

Jim's always been a class guy when it comes to stuff like this. Even if you buy used scummies, he will always help you out. That's one of the reasons why my cabs all have scums in them now......oh, and maybe the tone a little bit!! Really his plan is genius.........gets you hooked no matter what!!
Like a crack dealer

Crack-dealer is right! hahaha.

Thanks for the response, Jim. Like I said, I'm already a Scumback lover and user.

And if these practice 112's were going to get used more than 2-3X a month, and NOT get dist and grime and beer spilled on them, this whole thread wouldn't even be an issue.

Uh oh, I may be in trouble if the phrase "Once you go scumback you never go back" is true as my first Scumico is on its way to me.

I have heard really good things about the Silver Bell from Weber too. The Blue dog and Silver bell are a pretty popular combination.

Gents, happy to help out when I can (although lately my time has been getting more limited)! There's nothing wrong with the Weber speakers. They made over 122 designs at one point, and Ted was trying to cut down a bit (can you blame him?), so that's why he insisted the Scumback recipe be an exclusive to my company. As he told me 6-7 years ago "I sure wasn't going to buy over 400 old Celestions to find the ultimate pre-rola speakers to clone, so you should get the rights to that tone/cone/build."

Now let's be fair, though, I approached Celestion and Eminence on doing this for me. Celestion said NO twice, Eminence said they'd try to get close, but I'd also need to buy 100 units of each speaker when I ordered. Do the math on 10 speaker models, 3-4 wattage versions, and both 8 and 16 ohm versions, and you wind up with having to order a whole boatload of speakers.

Weber VST (Ted Weber specifically) was the only company willing to put in the research to clone my "holy grail" pre rolas I sent for recreation. Ted almost gave up 2-3 times, partly because the internet hype started to get out of hand, partly because there were so many attempts with treatments, doping, suspension/parts, etc.

And frankly I like employing Americans. I realize that costs more, and that the labor on a Scumback is 5 times that of a standard Weber speaker. There's been far too much outsourcing going on in this country, and even though the magnets come from China and the cones from Britain/EU, they're still made/assembled here. So if that costs more to have the right tone, that's the way it's gonna be.

If you want budget alternatives to rehearse on, sheesh, that's fine, too.

Perfectly said Jim... True American you are!!! I can set you up with my magnet engineer, but at that point I think your speakers would be up to $300 a pop

I'd love to try a custom Weber 1225 with pre-rola dope and a bigger 40oz magnet (so they would match my other greenback based custom MG Music Black Dog speakers, that are around 99db - I guess they're voiced like the silver bell, as they have exactly the same parts)

but...
I ended up scoring a pair of used Scumback H75's from Capulin Overdrive for a pretty good price :D :D :D
I'm still waiting for them, though (brazilian international customs are slow as f***)

the M75 is still my favorite speaker from clips, but my MG Black Dogs completely buried the G12M 55hz blackbacks I had, so I guess the 97db sensitivity of the M75 wouldn't work well for this particular cab, unless I swap all speakers ($$$$)

I'd recommend the MG Black Dogs if they weren't as expensive as Scumbacks (they used to be cheap when I ordered them)
I think the 50w Silver Bell is worth a try for a bigger cab, if you can't afford new Scumbacks

but don't be cheap when choosing stuff like pickups and speakers
you can buy great stuff for cheap, and scumbacks won't be 3x better (like the price is), but a 95% great tone will never make you happy
and I've learned that those 5% are NOT snake oil, cork sniffery or whatever people call (well... sometimes they are, but not in most cases)
