I read that too, I also read Blackmore also used a preamp from an old tape player or record player, something like that.
I believe he used an old fostex or something on "Under Lock and Key" and cranked the levels. They used to get compressed sounding.
George said this in an interview in GTFPM back around '87, right when BFTA was coming out. He said that his demo's sounded better than what was being recorded in the studio, so he brought in his home 4 track and plugged into that as a preamp.
However, a subsequent Wagner (that was the guy that tracked that right?) interview, he said something to the effect of, well, George likes to think that he had more involvement in the process than he really did. In the end, if it helped him get a better recording (implying mentally), than I did my job. (or something along those lines).

The thing that got me is that every one of those solo's is improvised (as he does); every one is killer, and none of them are on the record (which is a statement of how in the zone he was for that first record).
