I remember him saying he boosted one song on one old record using an old tape player/recorder!?!? WTF? I don't know if he actually did this or if it was just another example of his sense of humor.
George said this in an interview in GTFPM back around '87, right when BFTA was coming out. He said that his demo's sounded better than what was being recorded in the studio, so he brought in his home 4 track and plugged into that as a preamp.
However, a subsequent Wagner (that was the guy that tracked that right?) interview, he said something to the effect of, well, George likes to think that he had more involvement in the process than he really did. In the end, if it helped him get a better recording (implying mentally), than I did my job. (or something along those lines).
I love that vid and tone as well! The thing that got me is that every one of those solo's is improvised (as he does); every one is killer, and none of them are on the record (which is a statement of how in the zone he was for that first record).
