I wouldn't consider the Mk III a metal amp.

oh, i would beg to differ bro. lot's of metal in the Mark III.
Eeh I just think Recto more then Mk III for metal, but I guess I was also thinking more death metal drop tuning for some reason than 80s style Ratt/priest/ozzy. An ozzy guitarist did use one so yeah I stand corrected and can see/hear that.

Which Ozzy guitarist used a Mark III? Gillis is the only Mesa player I can think of and the Mark III wasn't around yet during his brief tenure.

Tony Iommi played Mark III's and Coliseum heads during the 80's/90's.

Brad Gillis used the IIB. Actually 2 halfstacks with a stereo chorus pedal.

I know Anthrax used the Mark III at one point because Kirk Hamett talked them into trying Mesa. I think songs like Madhouse are Mesa Mark III's.

Not that it matters but the Offspring used Mark IV on all their albums.

One of the best lead tones that I ever put to tape was a cranked IIB (dimed with no pedals)...I need to try and find the old master.

You can pretty much nail the 80's AC/DC tone with the MK-IIB. And I do love that tone! Push the gain and the master a bit further and you have an amazing metal amp! One of the most underrated amps out there!

I currently have a 60W IIC+ (SRG; Converted from a IIC) and a Mark IVb. My take on the two is that they are are similar sounding in that they have that MESA Mark sound, however the IIC+ has a more open sounding gain where the IVb has a tighter gain. I have never tried a IVa so I can't say how that compares but supposedly the IVb is darker.

I think the IIC+ is a killer amp, but I think a good chunk of the hype is due to everyone chasing the Metallica MOP or AJFA sound. I know that was why I got it, but It can do a lot more than that.

Just my 2 cents.

But after listening to some clips of Mark III Red or Blue Stripes, I'd like to find one of those at a reasonable price and give it a try!

People just got to accept the fact that all roads to the top in the 80's and 90's passed through Petaluma, California at one point or another. It's the brand that people love to hate for some reason.

Mesa gets hate on TGP. Probably because Mesa is associated with METAL. A lot of musicians have this thing in them to hate something when it achieves a measure of success or popularity. Just look at the obscure overrpriced shit that nobody's heard of in the real world that gets elevated to God status over there.

The thing to remember is that there are VERY few C+ amps as compared to Mark III's. I have always contended that the Mark III Coliseum is a better amp for METAL music types. Is the C+ all hype? That is for the end user to decide. Definately NOT acheiveable with a test drive in a music store without a Mark III to compare it to. Also, both of these models are getting old enough to need a full service checkup. Any comparisons should be made with properly serviced amps. $4150???? Glad I bought in and held out when I did.

I sold my CII+ when I got my VH4/Herbert W/D/W rig together. Wish I would have kept the Mesa...

Seems like there's little love for the MkV's IIc mode which I think does it very well and well enough for many that normally use it to switch to the Mk V. I miss my IIc too, but with what I heard from the MkV I know I have another solution at least of spending some ungodly amount of money to get back my old one back.

does the mod mark iic sound the same as the original?

Mike B says my MKIIC Will be 100% genuine real deal, done by him, the guy that built the originals. But it will be a few bucks and have the letter from Mesa.

They will do other models and say they will be a version of the + mod. So you can get a MKIII+ if you want.

Seems pretty cool of Mesa. I like Mesa amps and the customer service is great. I keep hearing people on the Boogie Board saying the RA100 is your best bet to get close to the IIC+ tone.

It's only 1 guy saying that, RichB. But his clips of the RA100 are pretty killer so maybe he's onto something. I think the RA100 is a great amp.

GC carries them. But I avoid GC for a while. Weeknights is good. Weekends. Argh...

Yeah, that is what I read too and I know he used a Mesa for the Diary tour. You can see it off to the side of the stage in the Speak Of The Devil VHS/DVD.

Played a combo w/EQ in my local GC recently. Plugged it into a 4x12. There's definitely something a little different and nice in that lead channel. The clean channel was average at best. The gain has a very saturated but raw quality. Even scooping the mids on the GEQ you can still here a aggressive character in the midrange. They had it priced at $1999. I didn't find myself falling over to buy it. Good but nothing to make me hate what I have.

I own that one now. I bought it right around that time. I got it for $1899 and a free set of Pre and Power tubes since I had to get it serviced. Will be putting it into a Cherry Headshell (which I have) in the next few weeks (still needs to be finished). It needed work I had to send it to Mike B at Mesa and i came back to me with a bag of parts that needed replacing. Not to mention that the pins in the tube sockets were breaking of which i broke three, so I had to have the sockets replaced (much nicer now). I also have a couple of Mark IV's, but the 2C+ is magic. Tight, agressive and chewey at the same time. Just killer. I'm gassing for a Diezel VH4, just not sure if it would be better than my 2C+.
