I predict that EL34s will get you much closer to that 'English crunch' tone and probably suit whatever crunch you're after better than 6L6s.

Crunch doesn't come from power tubes?

I really want to check out the Royal Atlantic. It's supposed to have a dikton of gain. The clips sound pretty good.

That amp will be Mesa's "Marshall killer".

Marshall will always put out a good amp, just look at what they are doing with the AFD Slash model. That amp sounds pretty awesome. I think if the Royal Atlantic is successful, it will be on its own merit. You don't hear people still comparing Orange to Marshall. Each amp has its own vibe and similarities to other amps. The same with the Rectos and the Soldano's they were modeled after. If an amp takes off, it is because it sounds good, not because it is trying to be something else.

I agree. I actually think Marshall has been stepping it up lately with the AFD and YJM. I wish they weren't sig amps but at least they are doing some cool things with attenuation, boosts, etc that they can transfer to other amps.

Why not just get a Marshall since you want that crunch? You can get decent cleans and metal too.

Agreed...it didn't necessarily LOVE the tone, but it gave me an idea of how versatile the amp could be. Next step is to play the Roadster and the Mark V and see which one suits me the best.

Here's a good demo of versatility. I think I used one of his Mark V videos earlier, but again I like his because he's more of a rock player and doesn't just pound on the low E string.

That's one thing that I loved about my 2010 Dual Rec. Channel 1 pushed mode + my OD808 is instant classic rock crunch. Beatles, Zeppelin, Hendrix, you name it, that was the tone. It's super fat with a great touch response. The Crunch channel I more used for doom metal sludging, it is muddier.

I think most of the difference in that clip is mic positioning though. That 2010 doesn't sound like it should at those settings.

Could be, although he said the cabs on camera are just for show and that they had a 4x12 mic'd off camera so they could eliminate the mic movement... they just swapped heads into it.

The 2010 Rectifier definitely sounds a lot clearer than the older ones. I dunno though, I'm still diggin' that Roadster. 4 channels is really versatile.

I think the stiletto is definately a marshall killer. IMO its the best amp in their current lineup. Trick to get the hang of for a while though.

Umm, you had an ace combo  You should grab a duece for a week or 2

I hated mine for a good month, month and a half. Took a while to figure out for me

Stiletto will chop your head off with all the treble/high end imo.

Mine did until I got a handle on it. Then I found out its not that bright. Just weird...

I plugged it into other cabs. That amp is wierd, it really doesn't have any bottom end and the top end can tear your ear off. The wierd thing is that the amp forces you to tweak it a certain way to sound good, you have to set the treble and presence low and set the bass high.

I owned a Deuce a while back when GC was selling them for $850 new. I thought it sounded ok on a 4x12 but it needed volume. Well see how long until Mesa discontinues it though.

I had a Stilleto and the top end and searing mid range made the amp unbearable for me, especially at gig volumes..

Does the Splawn quickrod have this kind of thing going on in the high end?

i hate it when people compare EVERYTHING to a marshall

its either it sounds like a hot rodded marshall, or it sounds like a marshall with balls .... WTF !!! SHUT UP ALREADY !!!!

every boogie ive tried so far sounded nothing like a marshall at all ...

if anything they all sound as if their based off of the mark amplifiers, each amp is sorta tweaked around that one amp that got boogie started, and they all manage to have their own unique traits about them ...

+1

By the time I had it dialed, I had the treble around 11:00. The pres was low but the amp wasnt harsh or bright at all. Though mine had the hollywood mod. Might have been part of it. The tone changed drastically with the master so once i got the volumes where i wanted them and put in some JJ pre's and an EQ in the loop to bump the lowend a touch it was killer. The only amp I regret getting rid of. Those amps could really use a depth mod of some kind though.

I do believe they will be dicontinued soon. They have a bad rap. the recto guys plug into them and really freak out when they dont have that uber low the rectos have. I think the stiletto is now (with the into of the royal)officially the red headed bastard stepchild of the mesa lineup. Bummer

Wasnt this a question for the Mk V? Has anyone used it with a 212 open or closed? or 1x12? How is the Combo version? Does it have the Black Shadow MC90?
