A few riffs using the Marsha HBE model in the Axe FX Ultra, i've been getting really into this amp recently.

The first guitar is a Suhr Modern, the second is an Alder bitsacaster

Cheers

Rik

I read Marsha and I was like  Then I read AXE FX and I was like :(

sounds good...a little squirmy on the top end during the def lep and van halen clips. but on it aint like that, it sounded nice and sparkly, pretty close to jerry's tone. is that a struggle with the axe, or just this particular model?

i go back and forth...save for an amp...or save for an axe fx.

hmmmm....

No offense but sounds like a modeler to me.

None taken, i'm totally open to feedback. What would make it sound more like a real amp to you ? Or what is missing/lacking ?

You're going direct? I had a standard for a little while and used it with a Mesa 2:90 poweramp on a 4x12 and it sounded pretty good. The fact that you can use the Axe direct is a bonus and it's much better than Line6 products. Your clip sounds good no doubt but I still hear some qualities of a modeler, but it's close.

Rounder top end and overall ( on EVH ) more audible octave and octave and a fifth upper harmonic clearly ringing above the fundamental pitch.

Modelers have a hard time with this - but AXE 2 seems like it does not. Although I haven't heard or played either unit live- the Clips from Axe 2 seem to have more even order harmonics that are clear and audible.

More abstract- on the original the top end of EVH is real round and ringy- while yours has a little narly square wavy harsh overtone somewhere in it.
The trick is to eliminate that harshness without just making the entire tone dull ( rolling off too much high end will kill the openness of a tone, sometimes ).

The other thing is if the harmonics that are necessary for a certain tone are not present at all , no amount of EQ will really get you "there" precisely, but you can get a lot closer than you are now- I've heard gen1 clips that are pretty close to EVH.

I think so too. If this would be the sound I get if I'd buy an AxeFX II, I'd send it back. There's something one-dimensional to it, like a weird EQ combined with a lack of breath and dynamics. Not worse than badly close-miked amps though, it could fool me into thinking it was a bad recording of a real amp, or a preamp direct-in. The point here is that I wouldn't be happy with the sound, digital or not.

I'm sorry though, I think the playing was good and I really don't want to sound like a jerk and have another AxeFX whine fest. Maybe if it were plugged into one of those mini tube amps, it would sound a lot better... But then you obviously lose the advantage of direct recording (simplicity and silence).

Have you tried plugging it into a real power amp or head? How would you compare the sound difference yourself?

IMO it's impossible to describe the differences. Tone is a bitch to describe.

I appreciate all the input, for this recording i was going direct from the Axe via a stealthplug into Garageband, using stock cab sims and no mics. So not exactly high end recording gear...

I know lots of guys use para eqs to shape the subtelties you're describing about the highs but tbh i'm not that much of a tweaker.

I use the axe with apower amp and a 2x12 cab with v30s live and in the room and it sounds great, super versatile for gigging and way cheaper than several heads and a ton of fx.

As i said though it's great to get feedback, plus i've never heard a real Marsha in the flesh, i'd love to try one at volume :D

No need to crank it up, here's mine, HBE at low volume with a mic slapped in front. https://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_so ... ID=9637379

Hellz YAZ man! That's killer...

What are your settings for that? Can you PM them to me? Thanx in advance!
Thanks. Volume on 1 all other knobs were all at 12:00, HBE, EVH Custom GB speaker, E906 mic, Tom Anderson Hollow drop top.

IMO it's impossible to describe the differences. Tone is a bitch to describe.

The best way I can describe the differences I hear, is that with an amp, you hit the string, and the tone sort of 'blooms'... the full effect of the string vibrating isn't immediate. Listening to clips, it's as if the full effect IS immediate, which gives your ear the idea that what you're hearing is a bit more linear.

Then again, these are YT clips, where there's file compression going on, so it's all a rather poor arena to be making decisions in. These are still great sounding boxes for the money, even if folks want to use them for the fx section only, IMO.
