Just picked up a mint 100 watt slx. Gotta tell you guys, I think this is the most underrated Marshall out there. Great hi gain tones and very dynamic. If it didn't say 900 on it, I'm sure it would have sold much better. Still , it's a killer bang for the buck.

Like a lot of Marshalls it needs volume. I had an SL-X that sounded good, once it was crushing the house.

Fun lead tones and good, higher voiced rhythm tones but I never liked how they had no tightness/definition for chugging and palm muting on the E string. I always wondered what a good modder could do to one of those. They always seemed like they were just a few tweaks away from glory.

The 2100 did come ion both el34 and 6l6 models. I had a 6l6 and it had a nice solid bottom.

I have a Modded SLX right now.....
It kicks all kinds of ass!
Owned about a dozen marshalls.....most of them modded.
FJA....Cameron....Egnater modded...Splawn Modded...
and this Guiterrez modded JCM 900 SLX kills them all. ;)
Amp rips it up!! :D

they originally came with el34 but later switched to 5881's due to availability of el34's at that time. The slx is basically the same amp as the 2100 and 2500 mkIII series 900's but with an extra preamp tube for added gain. I think that the mkIII's and the slx are really cool amps that get a bad rap due to the other 900's from that era. Once u figure out how to dial them in right u can get really nice tones out of them. What I really dig about that series is the factory footswitchable dual master volumes which is a feature that is priceless for gigging. THese are a great deal used if u shop around and are patient.

I found out about the early mkiii jcm 900 2100/2500's on another forum, and was intrigued by the fairly consistent reviews they were getting so I picked up a few on the cheap ($500) to compare to my JCM 800.

With the gain sensitivity (diode control) on 0 and the preamp gain turned up they definitely have JCM 800 vibe going on.

Anyone looking for a classic Marshall sound on the cheap with some extra features (imo) that make them great gigging amps owe it to themselves to take one for a spin.

Here's my 2500 boosted with an SD-1 and graphic EQ set for a slight mid boost, trying to get some 80's type tone. The mkiii's came with EL34's.

Please excuse the sloppiness.
