Thread revival as I picked up an AFD100 recently. Anyone still using one? Tell me your preferred settings, cabs etc. So far I can't get along with #34 mode, but AFD is a lot of fun with a nice Les Paul.

Cool video, I’ve always liked his playing. But I’ve never cared for his tone. Don’t hate it but it doesn’t thrill me either. Always too nasally and not enough body in the rhythm tones. Works OK for the lead tones, kinda, better for the neck pickup but in general his sound is a pass for me.

Gain - Maximum (trust me)
Master - 3:00
T/M/B - Noon
Presence - Noon
Power - Think of this as your actual Master Volume. So use to taste. If you have a Fryette PS, leave the Power at maximum.
Set your guitar volume at 7. Yes, seven. Put your tone knob at 7. Yes, seven. Trust me.

What is it about having the guitar volume backed off you hearing? Is this just for hot pickups?

If you have a traditional non-treble bleed guitar, rolling back the volume to seven will take the brittle highs out of the amp. Then you turn up to 10 for leads or down to 2-4 for "cleans." That's the way the amp is designed to be used. If you use it this way, it sounds godly... as good or better than a JEL100.

I had the AFD 100 for a short period of time and really really wanted to love it. I didn’t bond with it at all. It’s absolutely a single channel head with options. The Vintage Moden is too, but found it way more useful. Had I had something like an underlined or Oscillator Siren, I’d have kept the VM and might get one again as it’s an awesome amp.
The AFD was way too bright and needs the right pickups and guitar to sound good. For what it is, it’s great but it’s not a versatile amp, if that’s what you’re after.

No, versatility is not required - a one trick pony is fine if that trick is great.
We you using it with V30's? I don't know what they voiced the amp using, but I suspect it was older greenbacks (M's). With these I don't find it overly bright, it sits pretty well with actually.

Yeah it is not a versatile amp. It kind of does two versions of the same thing, with one mode being thicker with more gain. I mean, a Plexi isn’t a versatile amp either and the AFD is actually more versatile than an old Plexi!
IMO it sounds great with GBs, V30s (the older the better), CB H75’s, and even G12T75’s. I use mine in the room with a Jubilee V30 cab wired at 8 Ohms and a Friedman 4x12 with modern V30s and GBs. Sounds great if you watch my video and follow the instructions.
