I'm on the fence about this - started buying some cool old Marshalls because I was getting tired of channel switchers. I have a '70 100 watt coming in next week, already have a '72 100 watt, a '74 50 watt, a '68 spec clone. All have had master volumes added, and with a hotplate sound fine on their own. I can push them a bit with a TS9 type pedal to get into easy solo territory. My problems with this setup:

1) Time base effects sound like crap
2) No volume boost available for leads

I can solve both problems by using the line out on the hotplate to another power amp, and then run effects after the hotplate line out but before the power amp, but it's a LOT of stuff to carry around. May not be as big a deal if you keep the rig at home.

Running a marshall clean and using pedal.. doesnt run into those issues until it gets the power section running hard. I compared this effect to a tmb 18 and they totally suck for time based just because no headroom when turned up even half way.. nothing new here..

fix is leave headroom and actually both issues are pretty much fixed.. A 100 watt marshall with no master vol will work. I'm doing it. Rather I do it with MV wide open, they work. The lead boost. the vol control is on the guitar or a pedal set lower output. if ya just dont smack the front end the power section for everything you do, it works pretty good.

I just like using a marshall to generate grind... not as a clean platform. I'd rather use my '60 Fender Concert for pedals.

stock is better
it is of my opinion that you have bought and sold every pedal ever made, and always seem to be the first on the block to do so.

you may need intervention.

many men need the intervention of other men to overcome many men's issues

Well getting back on topic on Wednesday we spent about 4 hours with the Plexi and various pedals. We used it in a W/D setup and without. For clean tones backing off the volume knob the W/D really sounded amazing and big!! For rhythm and leads the W/D might have been a bit bigger but probably not enough for the extra stuff involved. The tones were amazing for 70's, 80s and 90s music.

As far as time based effects sounding bad, ran with the Marshall at a high enough volume to have some crunch but using the boosts to send it over the top this was not a problem. Two boost/drive pedals into two different delay pedals into amp. The delay was in the right spot and the amp was driven enough to get the Plexi goodness but time based still sounded really great!

I will say an attenuator would be cool to try as we had things at a very loud volume to get the goods. But the note clarity and the harmonic content coupled with the woody, articulate tones was just incredible. The volume knob rolled back was gritty clean and had such a percussive spank to it, well just amazing.

I realize a few people in this thread said when they did this it felt like something was missing, but I would say this makes the high gain amps I have had seem like they were lacking or missing. Thanks for the replies and enjoy whatever makes you happy!!

I've got a newer 1959 re-issue with the fx loop. I run delay/reverb in the loop and everything else if front of the amp. Sounds really good. My BB Preamp gives plenty of boost for solos.

BTW, the other pedal that works really well with this set-up is a keely compressor. That's the one pedal I never turn off.
