bought a 5150 about a month ago, love it, but actually curious to hear some more amps. I usually play metal type music so looking for a pretty gnarly head. I have been looking at some of the rectos and engl's,framus. Curious to know what more ppl think?

I been looking at the dsl's lately but curious to know more of everyones opinion

Give me examples of the types of tones you're going for? Which bands do you listen to?

I've got a Framus cobra and it kills. Huge, tight bottom end. Very articulate with a great clean channel. Likes to be played very loud. Doesn't sound very good at lower volumes. Definitely have to open it up to get the fuzz out. But all around a great amp.

DSL's are pretty great and depending upon what type of Metal you're looking for it can usually do it...might need a boost in some instances. Other than that I'd pick up a Mark IV...wicked with a great clean channel and really versatile.

I love Daron M's tone on SOAD's Mezmerize and Hypnotize albums. All DSL.

I usually like to listen to killswitch engage and unearth, god forbid, which i know that unearth uses 5150's and killswitch uses alot of shit. but i know marshall is a really good high end

Well DSL's are nice amps. I like them a lot. There are a lot better amps out there though for the kind of music you're looking for. Perhaps you need to think about a Diezel Einstein, Bogner Uberschall, VHT Pitbull, or something like that. The DSL excels at one thing extremely well - the hotrodded Marshall sound. It does other things pretty well, but not exactly the most suitable for hardcore.

I went to a store and played a Diamond Nitrox and Phantom a couple of times. I liked the Nitrox more than the Phantom. I think the Nitrox had a better clean channel and better sounding overdrive. Judging by the names, I thought the Nitrox would be the more metal of the two but it wasn't that way.

They seem pretty well built and the Nitrox sounded pretty good. I would consider using it for a couple of different styles, but it's well-suited for metal. Maybe you might want to try something new like that. Develop a sound of your own and get away from the more traditional Marshall sounds and stuff maybe.

They're pretty expensive but I've seen a few good deals and trades on them. If you can get out to play one you might like it.

I think they are great amps, For those type of tones you may want to goose it with a little somthing to tighten it up a bit, I think LD 2 is a bit squishy for heavy rhythm work, but sounds good for leads. I like the bottom boost, but not the tone shift, you loose too much of makes a Marshall a Marshall :D The clean channel is pretty good, and sounds good boosted. I'm not sure if your looking at a brand new one, or an older one, mine is one of the older ones. I have not heard the new ones, I dont know if they are the same or not.

Come on Kevin. For all those bands you mentioned you don't get a much more ideal head than the 5150. I mean that head has been used by all those bands and used on almost all their cds. The Oncoming Storm, Alive Or Just Breathing, Gone Forever, Determination, and so on and so forth. All those albums have 5150 on them. The only other thing I could think of is going with a Rectifier. I am just more of a guy who sticks to the tried and true brands.

That being said I want a Fireball hahahaha and a Suhr Od100SE+.

I thought Alive or Just Breathing was an SLO? Was the 5150 mixed in?

I guess that makes since, considering I HATE the tone on that album, even though it's one of my favorite albums ever.

Triple Rec and 5150 I am pretty sure. The End Of Heartache has 5150 on it also.

Now that is a solid question. You like Killswitch, why not hit up a Nitro?

Wow, I always thought it was an SLO. I know Joel used one for awhile during that era.

Yeah he has the Slo with the Warren Hayes mod. I know they did use it on the Holy DIver cover for sure. I just think the Slo tone is way to smooth for whats on AOJB.

I know he was running a SLO almost bone dry when I saw them on their first tour.

Yeah, I can agree with that, but there is something about the mids and the gain structure that reminds me of a SLO.

Yeah I could see that also. I wish I could have seen them back then. I have seen them like 7 times and love it every time, but it would have been nice to have seen em back in the day. Was that the Soilwork tour or before that?
