Hey, guys!

I've been looking in to getting a marshall in a box type pedal for some time now. I feel like I'm already leaning towards the Carl Martin stuff, just based on what I hear on good recorded clips like Pete Thorn's and others that I have come across, but I was just wondering what everyone is digging.

I like the idea of the original because it has two different gain structures and a boost. I dig that. However, I hear it can be fussy with certain amps. I dig brighter American clean tones for sure with a little breakup, but, I hear it's better with a more neutral sounding clean. I also hear that the single channel is a little more versatile in that regard, but not sure? And in the case of versatility, there is also the Vertex Mod to the Plexitone.

Keep in mind, I'm still working out a pedal friendly gigging setup. I'm leaning towards something like the Suhr Bella, or a Fender Bassman with a 212.

Anybody ever compare all three versions at once? The OG, single channel, and Vertex mod? If not, anyone at least compare the original and the vertex? Is it possible to get the same sound out of the Vertex as the original if desired, or does it make it a lot different? More amp friendly? Would love to hear the scoop!

I'd also love to hear anyone's take on other Marshall in box type pedals, but, I really like how the Carl Martin keeps from collapsing on itself when playing high on the low E on the neck pickup. That's a big thing for me. I have an XTS Atomic overdrive, but this doesn't do so well in that regard. Great pedal and love it; It certainly has it's place :) but, that's what I dig about the Carl Martin based on Pete Thorn's findings and other well recorded demos I've heard.

The grand plan is eventually to get a Musicom or something similar, so if anything, if it only likes duller sounding American amps (should I go the Bassman route), I can probably make that pedal go to a different channel of a bassman for example I imagine? Not sure though. Anyway, I'm rambling.

Thanks, guys!

Mike.

It's not all boutiquey, but the Crunchbox was designed to be a Marshall in a box and it does a fine job. Nice price, too.

check out the mxr superbadass and start with everything at noon, I think youll be surprised....

Awesome! Thanks for the tips, guys! I have some researching to do! How do these handle that collapsing/bottoming out on itself neck pickup high up on the neck thing? I have a bogner red, and dig that; Stays tight and articulate. It personally isn't reuse enough for me. Has plenty of gain, but not that hair and grunt like a marshall would, you know?

Yeah, they sound great in these vids. But one always has to keep in mind: It IS Pete Thorn playing.

Bastard... With his chops and feel and such...

I think the Carl Martin pedals are the best currently available at getting that Plexi sound in a box. But Wampler has a few sweet pedals like what you're looking for. The Pinnacle and Pinnacle Deluxe are pretty good at getting that JCM800ish tone. And the Plexi-Drive is pretty good too.

A "sleeper" pedal that really surprised me is the BOSS ST-2 Power Stack. It is a tad noisy at high gain settings, but it's a damn good "Marshall-in-a-box" pedal that won't set you back much. Check it out.

This

Nothing better
Really sounds this good in person

I have had a few and my favourite is the Wampler Plextortion, it sounded closest to my ears. BUT you have to be careful how you dial it or it can get fizzy easily.

+1
I keep mine on my board as a backup to my JMP in the event something happens. I can run it into an EHX 44 magnum and get pretty close....at least close enough to gig with for what I need.

Ramble FX Marvel drive has got to be the best I've ever heard period... You NEED to go to YouTube And listen to it or demo it... Seriously, go listen.

Really need to specify the type of MIAB era you are looking for.

Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret (DLS) is an overdrive pedal designed to bring you the sound of a classic Marshall.

Yeah, I've bought 4 or 5 of the pedals Pete has demo'd  and I can say with no doubt, that I, nor the pedal sounded like Pete's vids. First, it's Pete playing, 2nd it's Pete's recording skills capturing the sound you hear, 3rd, you or I are not Pete.

Regarding those pedals I bought........I sold them all and got a Splawn Quickrod.
