Any 80's guys in here have any experience with one, a few of the clips sound pretty good. Ive been using my 78 2203 jmp with a VFE standout 3 or the sd1 for at least 8 years now. Wondering how the 800 modified stacks up going straight in the amp. Woud be nice to get away from the boost pedals. I can get one for a killer price, has me thinking hard.

Dude . I have a 78 2203 . It’s the shit , best year. Stick with it. If not I’ll buy yours . lol 78s

78 2203s are awesome, I have one too, make sure your filter caps are in check, pop in a Legendary tones Mr. Scary, leaving it turned off will keep it stock, turning it up will get you well into modded 2203 territory and beyond. Way cheaper and better than the Marshall modified 800.
A Fryette PS-100 is way better upgrade too, then the "official" modified heads.

Don’t move the JMP to get the Modified whatever you decide. You’ll regret it. You’re just a little bored with it but after you lose it, you’ll realize you had the best sound and let it go….I know from experience.

I'll trade you a 800 modified for your 78

all kidding aside ........ don't do it ...... if anything ...... change the spices going into that 78 .... try some different drives ... find a pedal maker that can build you what ever drive you want ... and that can make any combo of any drives you want .... cause that's what I'd do with that 78 ... I'd gain stage that puppy

the modified 800 will just get you close to what you already have now .... all in my opinion of course ...

I actually agreed with Count Dracula on this amp. When he compared it to his Bad Boy, the modified in my opinion sounded better with the mods, switched off, and just run an SD-1 into it.

I agree with this - although I think the Caswell module sounds better than the Mr. Scary. Either is a legitimate fix to take a 2203 from being one dubiously useful channel to one quite useful channel.

why people are so against using boosts pedals is something ill never understand, but if thats the route youre looking to go id say try it and see :dunno:
Easy - If I wanted to sound like a tubescreamer, I'd plug my guitar into a TS and then into the board (IR optional). If I want to sound like an amp, I'll plug my guitar into an amp. It's a simple formula - plug into what you want to sound like

Have you even tried an OD in front of an amp? Boosting a Marshall with a TS doesn't make it sound like a using one into a clean amp. The amp being boosted still sounds like the amp it is.

Brilliant question.

If I want to sound like a TS, I absolutely have that capability. I own two. They sound like TSs, no more no less.

Plugging into a TS to get an amp sound is like buying a bannana in hopes it will taste like an apple.

If you want to scratch that itch.... go ahead and grab the modified if it's a good deal BUT hang onto your 78 2203! Then see which you prefer. My guess is your 78.

If you do get it, please let us know your thoughts after!
