i heard that the old g12t-75's are more like a fat greenback and the new ones are more scooped sounding. that's truly the case with my speakers.
I would add that the old 75's have a bit more clarity, almost a transparency to them.
At least mine are that way. :D

next, i would like to pimp out the head case. maybe some white piping....who knows?

I've been gigging for a month using a Marshall JMD501 and so far it's really impressing me. I was using the Line 6 DT25 + HD500 rig for the previous 10 shows with my band, but eventually I felt I needed to get better Marshall tones than I could dial in with the Line 6 rig. I also wanted tighter clean tones. Since I currently own both amps, I thought it might be useful to post some comments based on a side-to-side comparison.

So I bought a JMD501 on sale a month ago. Both the DT25 and the JMD501 have a speaker-emulated XLR direct out on the back. Since I like using the XLR to feed the FOH system, I decided to compare the two amps tones using the direct outs on both. So I set up both amps through the same PA in my garage and switched between them on clean and distorted settings. For me, the Marshall won in all categories. I even think the effects stack up well against the Line 6 rig, although there is less flexibility in the parameter settings.

Through the built-in speakers, I find that the JMD501 speaker lacks low end, so I may do a speaker swap. But the tube power section has a good feel, and the digital preamp sounds better than the Line 6 design to my ears. I have a bunch more shows coming up with this amp, so will probably post an update later. However, to me, it does sound very good! Other than to do the comparison, I haven't powered up the DT25 since getting the JMD501. YMMV.

Peace, Pete \:D/

Thought I'd chime in. I have had Camerons, a Cali mod, JMPs n JCMs', Voodoo modded plexi-lots of great sounding high gain Marshalls stock and modded. ALL are gone except my Jubilee and my JMD 100H. I run an EQ through the loop and push the front with an OCD and this amp rivals ANY of those boutique amps I had. Sounds great through a well worn V30 cab from the 80s or greenbacks. Add a great noise gate, delay and good cleans and its the best 600 I've ever spent. It would have been worth 1200 with the sounds I get.

Just wanted to follow up on this with further thoughts from my experiences with the Marshall JMD501. I gotta say, having gigged with the SV212 aand the SV212 Mkii and the HD500/DT25 combo, and now the JMD501, that the JMD gives me everything I want in the core amp tone. Yes the effects are a bit limited and lacking in variety, compared with what you can get with the SV series, or certainly the HD500. However I just played a show last Saturday with the JMD501 and the clean tone (hit with a boost from my Z.Vex Super Hard On) was absolutely amazing with my Strat. Likewise, I was able to dial in some picture-perfect Marshall distortion tones for the lead parts that were unreal to hear on the live stage. I did swap the stock speaker for an Eminence Texas Heat though. With the stock speaker the amp did not work for me, but with the Texas Heat in there it just sings. I mic it with an SM57 about halfway between the center and the edge and it sounds awesome through the PA clean or dirty. The clean channel also takes dirt pedals exceptionally well.

It's taken a lot of experimentation for me to find tones that work for all the music my band is playing, which is classic rock through top-40. There is so much diversity in this amp that it's not easy to pre-plan all of the patches at home. I have played around 15 shows with it and am still learning new tricks and tones. You can't gauge its depth at home, only the gig will really tell you what's what. At least that has been my experience. I try to dial in some approximate tones at home, then I tinker with them at the gig in the setting of the band mix. I did that again at the last show to find the new lead tone I used. I don't play the JMD too much at home, I use smaller amps for that, but at the gig it rules, sounds just perfect in the context of the band mix. I never experienced anything even close to that level of satisfaction with the SV series, either Mki or Mkii, or the HD500/DT25 combo. In fact I sold the HD500/DT25 rig after buying the JMD501 and comparing them side to side. As mentioned above, I did find it necessary to replace the **bleep** stock speaker with an Eminence Texas Heat. I also have a Cannabis Rex brand new in the box which I haven't even tried yet because I'm enjoying the Texas Heat in this amp so much. Love this amp! Pete

I'm bumping this thread because I did a benefit last weekend and the guy organizing the event provided all the PA and amps. I just brought my guitar and plugged directly into the amp which was either the JMD50 or 100, not sure which. We only played 13 songs so I really didn't have anything but a clean, crunch and a high gain hotrodded marshall tone (I know is there anything else?) I have to say that even though I really didn't get to put it through it's paces to see what all it had, I was really impressed with the sound of the amp. And mind you, I just showed up and plugged directly into the amp. Not a single tweek on the EQ or anything. The guitar that I played was a CS LP standard with a Suhr Aldrich in the Bridge and the stock 57 classic in the neck.

I'm not sure what the clean model is, but I thought it was really good. Hard to describe, but for what we were doing it was very good. I know it's very subjective but it was everything a good clean channel should be for me. The crunch channel he had set up was I believe was a JCM 800 model and thought it came very close to that sound for the more classic rock type things. And, the 2204 is my main gigging amp The one that really surpised me was the model that the had set up from the JVM red channel. I've never played an actual JVM but if it sounds anything like the amp model on this rig I think I would like it very much. That channel had a ton of gain but still had that in your face type sound and the note to note clarity was very good. The only negative thing I will say is that model didn't clean up very well with the volume knob which is very important to me. And, not ever playing a JVM, I'm not sure if the real amp on the red channel is that wayas well.

So, I would like to here some more about this amp from people on here because I was so impressed with the amp, I'm thinking of getting one as a backup to my main rig. It seemed to be a very good all in one solution becaue I thought the effects that I used were decent as well (delay, chorus and reverb). I'm really surprised thing thing didn't catch on better.

What??? No comments?

I would easily go Blackstar... the JMD is a huge pile IMO...

I spent lots of time playing the JMD at my local Sam Ash wondering why Marshall ever released such a un-inspiring, toneless, fizzy pile of dung like in the frst place...

Really? Not my experience at all. I didn't set up the channel patches, but maybe the guy who owned it spent some time tweeking it. For example, the stock patches on my RP1000 weren't very good at all. In fact, I couldn't find anything usable for my purposes. But, putting a little time in setting up my patches I can get some really good tones out of it. I would suspect that since it is a modeling amp, it would be very much the same.

I've gigged 24 shows with my JMD501 since I switched over from my HD500/DT25 rig last summer. I have never looked back, and I've never harkened to have the old rig back again. In fact I have dabbled with a few other amps since switching to the JMD, but nothing has dislodged it so far.

24 shows, and around 300 hours of stage/rehearsal time, with the same amp is a new record for me, after having gigged with dozens of different amps over the past 6 years. So I definitely do like this amp. However I can't overemphasize the importance (for me) of swapping out the stock Chinese Celestion for something decent like an Eminence speaker.

The JMD501 model is getting very difficult to find because I think they are starting to have a cult following. On the other hand, the JMD102 2x12 model is easy to find, because they have a terrible reliability rating due to the fact that the cabinet falls apart from the weight of the big chassis and the two speakers in that amp. But the JMD501 seems pretty sturdy, and it's not too heavy to move around easily.

I can get really good clean tones from Model 1, and I can get good distortion tones using one of the distorted amp models, or by running a pedal into the front end of Model 1. The built-in effects are adequate for someone like me who doesn't tend to use a wide variety of effects. I'm currently trying to find a second JMD501 as a backup but I can't find one used or new. It's clearly not for everyone but it works pretty well for me. YMMV

Did it take some tweaking to get you where you wanted it to be?

Not too much tweaking if you use the clean channel. Basically, I set gain, bass, mid to noon, with volume to taste, and treble boosted to around 3 o'clock. Add chorus, reverb, delay as needed. I run a dirt pedal of choice through a Z.Vex SHO set to a bit above unity gain, then through a volume pedal into the Marshall. I can gig with that setup. I usually use Model 1 for cleans but occasionally Model 2, which seems to compress a little more when using a dirt pedal in front of it. Fun!

If you want to use the distortion models on the amp then you need to tweak a bit more. My favorite distortion models are 8, 9, 10, 13, and 14. I enjoy using those voicings when I'm playing a larger venue because I find that you need to turn up the volume a bit in order to have the tubes cooking to get good sound out of the distortion channels. Hence in low-volume venues I just use pedals through the clean channels.

I mic the Eminence Texas Heat speaker with an SM57 midway between the center and the edge of the speaker.

Old thread, I know. I was wondering if singtail could share his settings for the 4 basic sounds you're using on the video?

Dude. Singtail could dial in one of those little cigarette pack amps to sound good if it had a modleing feature!!!
