Saw a Marshall Mode4 for sale in the classifieds. Its sale pending. Got me thinking about the mode 4. I know when it came out, it was pretty much a failure. Just curious how they are viewed now. I played one years ago in a store, but too long ago to remember much.

Interested to know how they are viewed now. Anyone actually have one?

Killer underrated amps, can sound bad, but dialed in right they sound great, pissed that I missed that deal.

Okay....I have played a Mode4 in store, and it sounded like muffled ass. BUT, i didn't get to crank it up.

Live, I saw a guy using one, and it sounded pretty good. They were playing Mr. Brownstone by Guns, and it was pretty good. But the other guitarist was super pissed that his counterpart traded away a DSL for it. :lol: :LOL:

Some things were great, some werent. In the end, I thought it was much better than I expected it to be... Its been so long since I played that I cant be more specific..

Kage

I was a Marshall dealer back then and spent a lot of time with that amp. Sounded like a 9 lb. bag of dicks. Honestly sounds more like a Dual Rec, a broken one, that is.

Lmao!!! as opposed to the 5lb and 12ib bags of dicks?

They also had 70w Vintage 30's in the cabs.

MF280=V30
MF400=G12K100

I have a mode four cab with the V30's and it kicks major ass. Same size as a Recto (oversized).

I had one of those too. Fucking high gain channel was so freaking noisy. Still not too bad for a SS head. Kinda gay looking.

Alex Skolnick uses them.

He swears by them. I think that guy that played with Rob Zombie does too. Forget his name, Johnny 5, Marc 5, Moroon 5 beats the fuck outta me. Saw him live when Zombie opened up for Priest or Maiden, can't remember that either. :confused: His tone sounded ok with it.

I heard the Mode four had reliability issues. Overheating or catching fire or someshit. :dunno:

to get the nasty type of gain to go away you really had to open that damn thing up and make the speakers smoothe it out for you, but it would definately move some air. not my ideal amplifier of choice at all for lead playing but for rhythms i could make it work for sure IMHO. decent clean channel too, at least to me - i liked it.

John 5 did use them when they first came out as marshall was pushing them but now he went back to his old jcm 900 dual reverb, he only uses the mode 5 as a backup now. Alex skolnick raves about them, he says many dont like the mode 5 because they dont take the time to dial it in right as it is quite tricky to get right. U can still get them new but only under special order from marshall uk.

I used it in a cover band for a while and it worked. I wonder if mine had a problem on the red ch. SOOOO freaking noisy. The gain was not up very high either. :confused:

Oh, and a little known fact. The MH cabs came with 16ohm G12K100's. The 16ohm versions were very hard to come by but not if you know where to look. :lol: :LOL: :thumbsup:

i HATED it. If you're going to go solid state or Hybrid, get a randall

I used to have a fender metalhead and I got it for 100, It actually sounded pretty good, but the controls were much to be desired on the red channel, presence and contour. It sounded pretty good through my Mesa boogie Thiele cab, and The thing was Pretty damn loud. I would like to get one back sometime. I still have the rack/headshell from it, and I may just go to the place I sold it to to see if they still have it, and run it through my recto cabs :)

Right on. Yeah it was quite a few years ago when I saw him. That is interesting that you can still order one new.

That's cool man. It worked for what I was doing at the time. I am too much of a tube snob to go back now. :lol: :LOL:

With a SD-1 in the front it's pretty damn cool on OD2.

Sorry you missed the deal Juggs; I had to sell fast to fund other purchases; I got the halfstack with the B cab loaded with K100s for $650 shipped which was a killer deal. I lost out a bit on selling the head, but it wasn't in mint condition by any means, so you can only ask so much.

The insides of the amp were super clean, and it gets LOUD.
