Mark go out to the GC in Monroeville and play their Stiletto Ace 1x12. It sounds AMAZING! I damn near bought it.

i can't stick up for the reliability of the dsl's, but i've heard more than a few guys get good classic marshall tones from them on the green channels.

I seriously, seriously, serriiiiiiooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuusly doubt you will like the Vintage Modern.

DSL kicks ass though, but Id get the head version. You can pick up a used DSL head for cheap, mang.

Hmm, really? yngzaklynch's VM video clips sound amazing IMO. I was leaning towards the VM because it has a few more options like the mid boost and the body and details controls.

The VM combo doesn't sound anything like the head, so I've heard.
They have both at a store here. 1999$ for a 50W head, i don't think so!

I know.
The local prices here are insane.
You can buy a new head from the US, pay transport, pay taxes/duty/brokerage/ and STILL be cheaper than local shops.

I like those amps too. I would pick an Ace over a DSL or TSL anyday. You just have to keep the treble and presence down though. But at the prices the DSL is going for, it's a pretty good buy. But i don't like them stock and i would have to send one to the chop shop to get modded.

I just found a Mark III red stripe in Guitar Center that i picked up for $700. The guys in the store didn't know how to tweak it but after 20 seconds of knob turning i had it screaming. It seriously bitch slapped every amp they had in the store   I'm bringing it Sunday.

+1 That's good advice. Mesa has it all over Marshall when it comes to combos.

I used to have a 5150 combo, didn't like it nearly as much the head plus it weighs 90 lbs.

I was considering maybe getting one and putting 2 Greenbacks in it, but I dunno.

I love greenbacks, but I think I've heard that they REALLY don't work in an open-back situation. Honestly, I really think you should keep the 5150 and get a 2x12 cab. If you need portable, then put castors on it. An open back situation is not going to be tight or have much low end.

I think this is a very good suggestion, or get a used DSL head. The 2000 series combos are notorious for problems and don't sound great.

you might be able to find a jsx combo for a good deal

Nice!

Marshall in general isn't known for its combos, just like Fender is known for its combos and not its heads in general.

If you go with a marshall get a head and a 212 or 112 closed back cab....

You don't want either one of those amps. It's pretty much that simple hehe. Not your thing.

And why a combo? Even freaking Vox AC15 1x12s are heavy. 2x12 combos are like the worst of all worlds to me, especially with tube amps.

Any of the 900,000 TOTALLY different amps he already owned in the past.

Was also thinking of maybe a Spider Valve, but I absolutely hate the Line 6 POD sound. Does it sound that different from a POD?

yeah, alot of difference
