Here's a live clip of my TSL combo from last weekends gig.

danyeo may disagree, but I don't think it sounds too bad.

Was also thinking of maybe a Spider Valve, but I absolutely hate the Line 6 POD sound. Does it sound that different from a POD?

Give the Spider valve a try, I played one a few days ago and was pleasantly surprised. Sounded 100% better than the Spider III that's for sure.

Give up on the marshall combos, many of the models are known for having heat issues, the DSL401 is one of them. I used to own a DSL401 and have played a DSL50, the DSL50 head was much better, especially for hard rock/metal....

Did you watch that video I just posted? That dude gets some pretty sweet tone from his.

How about a Vox Valvetronix combo?? I've heard some great clips from those and they seem very versatile.

:)

Yeah that new Eggie might prove to kick ass. Check it out. We need a review.

That guy is a good player and it does sound good. I just found that it was a super variable amp, one day it would sound good, the next day horrible. Only amp that was that variable. Also if you look closely at the video it looks like that guy is using a 112 extension cab, which really helps the amp as does a speaker change.

I just think the DSL401 falls short of the DSL heads. That's not to say the DSL401 sucks, but I like the heads better.

And that Egnator looks sweet

I'm pretty sure he's not using an extension cab. All of his videos are just with either his DSL or Engl Screamer combo. The Screamer sounds damn impressive too.

It's a Pod with a tube amp. It's still a Pod. I really don't find them to be better than the Spider IIIs. The crunch and clean channels on those aren't quite so offensive for a cheap amp. The Spider Valve just sounds boring to me. It costs more than plenty of actual tube amps that do their own sound well, while it's still just failing to mimic others.

Sounds a lot better than the one my friend had, we just couldn't figure that DSL out. It was probably a lemon.

Ive just bought a DSL 50 and the small Framus 2x12, really compact rig.

I will post a review on Wednesday, as i think this is more like what you should be aiming for

cheers tony

I just bought a used DSL 401 for $500 shipped. Hopefully I like it.

Just get both, keep them a while and sell the one you like less. Just got my VM 50W head and just LOVE it through my ported Heritage 2x12 with a G12M and a G12-65.

Change that speaker out if it is stock, add a closed back extension cab, and use it with the master cranked, that is the best way I found to operate the DSL401.
