what are some good ones for under a grand? has to be good for metal (classic metal, death metal, thrash metal). Want an amp with a good responsive midrangey crunch. preferably with plenty of gain on tap, I can boost though if needed.

also, doesn't necessarily have to be 'marshally' - also looking at some Peavey amps
also don't want an amp that needs to be modded

opinions on:

Peavey XXX
Peavey Ultra
Gallien Krueger ML250
Marshall DSL

I,d chose a 5150 or JSX over an XXX any day, I just find the XXX has some annoying high-fuzz things you can't remove, maybe that's just me tho.

i do like the 5150, just looking for opinions

also opinions on these:

vox ac50cp
blackstar ht5
rocktron vendetta
yamaha t100

Marshall DSL

The XXX is a GREAT amp, the "fizz" mentioned before is EASILY removed by putting a low gain 12ax7 in V1.

Another vote for the DSL. Tons of gain, very nice cleans

I have both the DSL and the XXX. The trick to the XXX is v1 like stated above. I put a GT12AX7m in v1 of mine and its a monster now with controlable gain and zero fizz. The XXX will cover all territory easily.

The DSL I am still messing with settings and preamp tube configs, but it will do what you are asking as well with no problems.

Another one to consider is the Engl Blackmore, Only problem is the shared controls, but it supposed to be a marshally type amp. Also the Laney Vh100R, not the easist to find, but a really nice amp.

I would drop the Vox AC50CPH, it doesn't have enough gain for what you are looking for. My old one could get classic metal but nothing really modern, even through Classic Lead 80 speakers.

i'm not opposed to boosting

and when I say death metal, I don't mean the super modern sounding death metal - think more classic death metal. basically I don't want the tone that HCAF considers to be 'teh brootlz' (i.e. - any band considered 'metalcore' or 'deathcore' or 'lamb of god')

FWIW, IMHO

laney "marshally" = not even close from where I'm standing!

rivera "marshally" = only the old TBR stuff

peavey = will always sound like a peavey

for $$ cheap, my Voxtronix AD60 VTX with boost sounds better for "marshally" than any of those.

I do like Peavey though

what amp do you think would get close to the sound of a Tiny Terror, only with a separate clean channel?

The new Egnater Renegade and Rebel 30 seem interesting, but I'm not sure when they'll hit stores.

Its looking like June.

Randall MTS amps.

those are a bit more pricey than i'd like because of having to buy the amp and then the modules

Since the OP included a Vox AC50CPH in his list, I assumed we were broadening the scope a bit to more British voiced amps.

I have a Laney VH100R and then got a Marshall 6101LE, they were in the same ballpark tone wise. I am surprised that you don't think the VH100R can get any marshall sounds, as for a while it and the GH50L were hailed as the marshall DSL and TSL killers by some....

DSL is your best bet. XXX is just an updated Ultra, and neither one of those is even remotely close to a Marshall sound. They are good for metal, definitely, but I've always found the midrange to be "weird" sounding and un-musical.

I kinda thought the Laneys were also heavily in the Marshall camp, too? I mean, back in the day the AORs were mostly a copied JCM800, no? FWIW, Opeth plays through Laneys, but I know Mikael uses a Boss FX processor for most of his tones, so not sure how much is actually Laney.
