Not too familar with that one. I shedded the 90s albums like a big dog along with most of the Dregs stuff, but never really checked the Kansas album out in any depth. Guess I should.

There isnt alot of stuff from his Kansas days that stood out for me but that one song in particular just did it for me. Here ya go, the solo starts at 3:29 but I dig the whole tune, y a gotta love Steve Walsh's voice..

Is that 3rd Power? I remember the crazy major triad arpeggio he used to alternate pick in the fade out solo on one of the tunes on there.

The rhythm REALLY reminds me of Adam' Jones Undertow tone. Love that tone :)

The Album was was called Power and I have it somewhere. There was another cool tune called Musicato or something like that. that may be the one that you are referring to...

Yeah, fun solo. Not too many rests to worry about. :D

If anyone hasn't been to The Steve Morse tab page before, it's an invaluable resource out there for anybody who wants to dig deeper into this great player's music.

Although, it's from quite a few albums ago, I think his solos on "Highland Wedding" and "Calcutta" may my favorites in terms of development, phrasing, lyricism, interesting rhythmic superpositions, riffs and of course, the exciting, burning lines at the end. My favorite he does on a guest album is probably the solo on "Snake's Got Legs" -- on the Michael Mannering album, Thonk -- for similar reasons. Int he end, it's a long, slippery slope discussing my favorite this or that about Morse though.

Great stuff, John! Sounds like a great tune in the making, and honestly some of the best AxeFx tones I've ever heard (and I listen to all of the clips).

Thanks Ron - the Axe with your little Mastermind little guy and two Expression pedals is the most powerful rig I have ever been able to hold under one arm. I used them together when we did some shows last summer like Warped Tour and Kings X, etc. Worked awesome!

John,
Was wondering why switching to the D-sonic?
It originally had the Morse PU correct?
What does the D-sonic do that you are liking?
Curious also if you have tried magnet bar away from bridge? Liked it?

Thanks

Well, I have two EBMM Morse guitars - the hard-tail is set up more for classic tones with DiMarzio PAF Anniversary humbuckers and Area 58/61 single coils. The trem guitar is set up for more modern and has the D-Sonic in the bridge magnet to bridge for more modern rock/metal tones. They recommnded this pickup along with the D-Activator for a little more whomp and clarity on the detuned stuff like this.

My Favorite tone of yours to date
Having heard pretty much all of them :D

sounds great man, couldn't imagine it getting much better then this.

Thanks amigos. In the amp world, I have also found the Hairy Brown Eye to be great for this kind of thing too - if you detune down to C-G-D-G-B-E, like this, it doesn't get loose and farty at all. I actually meant to ask David if he designed the HBE with recording as a primary goal, or if it just worked out that way becuase it records very well.

I think a main lure for the Axe is really the difficulties, logisitics, expense, and most importantly, the requisite experience for recording guitar tones. It's a long, difficult road to get your favorite tones to disk the old fashioned way. I feel like it has taken me over 10 years to at least feel like I have decent control of my own recording environment.
