I am by blood - I'm a British Australian because I'm white and that's where everyone in my family came from ultimately. We are here because we were a British Colony which is why there's a Union Jack in our Flag. Incidentally Canada had the union jack in its flag until 1965. In the same way that a person of Chinese origin likes to call themselves a Chinese American instead of just saying American. Legally and politically I'm Australian. Legally and politically you're American. If you identify with your legalities then that's what you are - I identify by my race because my country means nothing to me now that it's a melting pot. To call yourself Australian now means nothing culturally or racially therefore I don't identify with it. It doesn't speak to who I am anymore.
