Just got another Studio Pre. Used to have one a few years back with a 2:90 and it sounded better than any Mesa Boogie Head I've ever owned ( 3 MKIII's one with the C+ mod, a MKIV, A DC 10, 2 Dual Recto's, one Triple Recto...). More or less got it for a back to my .50cal+, but may use it and turn the .50cal+ into my backup...

Seems the price for 2:90's have jumped up significantly. Been reading about the 50/50's and 2:50's. My question is, are the 50/50 and 2/50 loud enough in a band situation? I'm not a bedroom player, could care less how the amp sounds at low volumes etc. I play in a band where the other guitarist uses a MKIII, our drummer is loud etc....

50 watts is PLENTY to keep up with a band, hell, 5 watts is! It isn't that 50 watts is half as loud as 100, 10 watts is half as loud as 100, so 1 watt is only 1/4 as loud as a 100 watt screaming head.

Get a 2:90, bro. They sound better than those other amps anyway.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking... Find me one for a good price!

I have to say the 2:90 really does sound better than either of the others. I've tried all three and there was really no comparison. It had nothing to do with the wattage ot type of tubes because my all time favorite power amp is the VHT 2/50/2 with EL34s or KT77s.

Anyone ever compare the 2:90 to the 2:100, Strategy 400, Strategy 500, or any of those other huge ass Mesa power amps?

I have a 50/50 and a 2:90 and don't think the 50/50 is inferior. Just has a different tone. I have no problems using either for a gig. In my opinion, feel free to save some case an get a 50/50!
