Mesa Mark V vs EVH 5150III

I am not a Boogie guy at all and I love the 5150III 50 watter. It is still on the outside edge of being Marshally, but it is so different to the Marshall tones I like, for me it is worth having in addition to Marshalls.

I owned a Mark 4 and Mark V and I would go with the Mark 4. Channel 3 is about as anti-Marshall as you can get.

I'd say Mark IV as well Carl. A Peavey 6505 may be a cool choice as well; it is a lot like a EVH 5150 III but with more balls, more bark, and less fizz.

Having owned Mark III's, IV's and a V....I liked the V the least and I like the 5153 more than any of the mark series amps....

The V leaves a lot to be desired IMO. High Gain settings sounded somewhat thin and small compared to the EVH. Take it for what its worth though, best to try one out if you can and decide for yourself. You might be able to find a guitar center that has both in stock.

This said.... Jerry at FJA amps does some incredible stuff with Peavey amps. Buy a used 5150 and send it to Jerry for his Metal Mod. I did and after almost a year I am still floored with the amp he sent back.

I like the evh for its dirt tones but not its cleans..like everyone said...a boogie is definitely anti marshall. I own a mkIV and III and love em both...I saw stryper up close with their mk v 's and it was crushing.....

I don't know what was up with the EVH you were playing, but I've owned both at the same time, and the EVH has way less fizz than the 6505. Like WAAAAAY less. In fact, it's just like a super smooth and refined 6505. Also, the EVH has just as much, if not more balls. It's just a "smoother" kind of balls.

The Mark V has a much better rhythm channel than the Mark IV. Mark V's vary, I've played some duds and some that sounded good. But there's a lot less Marshall about the Mark V than the 5150III.

I did this with the V when I owned one. I think if I used an EQ to boost the mids I would have gotten closer.

For something else try the Royal Atlantic or Electra Dyne but bring your favorite OD pedal and boost them.

Nice, how do you like it so far and how does it compare to the Landry?

It took awhile to dial in but I'm digging it! It's nothing like my Marshalls or Landry. The Landry is like a great 800 series Marshall w/ more gain. The Landry's Clean and MK V's Clean may be in the same ballpark.

I haven't owned a Mark amp since the MK III and Quad Preamp in the 90's.

Heh, I have a Quad and a MK III coliseum here. :D Maybe I'll buy a Mark V in twenty years.

Sup Carl ,

My take on it is if you really want to get away from the Marshall type vibe, Id go with the Boogie. I still think the 5150 III is still in the Modded Marshall catagory. The gain stages on the Mark are setup differently and the Graphic EQ will keep you busy dialing in new tones for years

With that said, If you winde up with either amp, don't think that you could lose. I know the price on the EVH makes is a hell of a more attractive, that's for sure
This is exactly what I was going to say...word for word, including the smileys :D

As for the suggestion that an ENGL Savage is anti-Marshall, I couldn't disagree more. Although the Savage definitely has its own thing going on to a degree, it's base tones are firmly rooted in Marshall territory. Its one of my favorite amps.

evh rips on all three channels... ch2 is not compressed ch 3 is tight as fuck with a compressed feel super creamy leads and great for hard ass metal riffage... I dont give to fucks for the mark, loose n gritty is my opinion, but who really gives a fuck what i think play em both!

what type of genre are you going for?
