I picked up a Mesa Quad preamp a couple of weeks ago. So far, it's sounding great. I've just been running in mono through one of my MkIII power sections up until now. I purchase a Mesa 2:90 power amp this last week and just received it. I'll be mounting both in a rack this week and start getting a bit of stereo sound going from it. I don't have the dedicated Mesa footswtich for the Quad, so for now I'm just using a shorted cable and manually changing channels. I do have a (currently unused) Voodoo Labs GCX and (old) Ground Control setting around, so I'll set it up just to do channel/EQ/reverb selection on the Quad once I have the rest hooked up. I'm watching for other options here, but honestly have a bigger issue I want to address first.
Here's where I'm looking for opinions. I have two old vertical Mesa 2x12 cabinets: the ones with the metal grill and that generally came as half-open, half-closed back. One of them has a panel to completely close it, but I can obviously leave it off to make them match, or can cut one for the other to close them both. I've had these around for years and never used them for much. They're just those things that popped up somewhere local for the right price, so I picked them up and put them in my home. They have completely mismatched speakers, so I need to figure out a plan for some speakers that'll work in these and sound good matched with the Mesa amps I have.......or if they sound good with my Soldano SLO that'd be great too, but the plan is a stereo Mesa rig with them.
One has an 8 ohm MC90 Black Shadow and an unlabeled, black framed speaker of some sort in it. The other has a 16 ohm Eminence Black Shadow in it and a 16 ohm Vintage 30 in it. Yeah, they're as mismatched as I can get. Everything I've read suggests these came with MC90's in the open-backed top and EVM's in the closed back bottoms. Anyone know if those were 8 or 16 ohm speakers? I only see 8 ohm EVM's for sale, so guess the cabs were originally 4 ohm cabs with two 8 ohm speakers in parallel. I'd just like confirmation there, and I suppose it doesn't even matter to my purposes.
I have a partially seized up 8 ohm EVM that came with my MkIII combo that I plan to take to a local shop to repair. That's an option. I also have a quad of vintage G12-65's I could put in there. I really like those with Marshall style amps. I've played my MkIII's through my Marshall cabs loaded with G12-65's and sound good, so I'm not against this option, but wanted to ask some opinions before deciding for certain.
Anyhow, opinions solicited. What should I put in the cabs? Feel free to make "finances aren't an issue" suggestions, but realistically I'm pretty tapped out after the preamp and power amp, so finances will definitely have some influence on what I end up doing!
