In Flames could be credited with the start of metalcore also, and they've been around since about the same time as Zao. (Early 90's) Who cares though? I like the stuff that sounds good, and not the fashion rock.![]()

Fair enough though, I would give In Flames credit for the whole using modal riff writing in metal at least.
And I agree, not to get too hung up on genres is a good thing, but I really hate seeing people slag metalcore thinking it started with KSE, or As I Lay Dying, when it's been around since the early 90s with bands like Converge, Zao and Coalesce
