I've heard both bands. But Killswitch has been around (in some form or another) since the late 90's. They just didn't get noticed until more recently. I'm just saying that they are one of the more important bands in the genre, and their early work with Jesse Leach is hardly comparable to the whiny, bullshit that's out today. It's saturated now because that's what happens with any good music. A bunch of copy cats jump on the band wagon and it just so happened that it took a turn for the worse and got pretty gay and emo.
In Flames could be credited with the start of metalcore also, and they've been around since about the same time as Zao. (Early 90's) Who cares though? I like the stuff that sounds good, and not the fashion rock. ;)

I think you're giving Killswitch too much credit

Fair enough though, I would give In Flames credit for the whole using modal riff writing in metal at least.

And I agree, not to get too hung up on genres is a good thing, but I really hate seeing people slag metalcore thinking it started with KSE, or As I Lay Dying, when it's been around since the early 90s with bands like Converge, Zao and Coalesce

I think it's sort of silly to call out a whole genre as being sucky. I dislike the repetitive nature of many of these bands, but you could say the same thing about pinch harmonics, pick slides, and cock-rock ride bell beats.

There are many really horrible metalcore bands; there are also a ton of horrible rappers, hair metal bands, and pop groups.

Killswitch Engage's "The End of Heartache," Architects's "Hollow Crown," Misery Signals's "Controller," and Oceana's "The Tide" are all listen worthy Metalcore IMHO. It really depends on your taste, but I'm open to all sorts of music, whether old or new, sun or screamed, growled or gurggled :D ;)

There are exceptions, I may have forgotten to write this in my OP.

I just got back from a Parkway Drive concert when posting it, very tired so sorry if I came off cranky.

I also like a few KsE songs, genreally don't like them much though, Architect's Hollow Crown I've given a fair few listens actually and I do like it, there's a few others aswell, I really like Unearth but I don't consider them in the same genre as the above bands though techincally they are 'metalcore'

Metalcore I'm speaking of is the type KsE are said to have invented,(They really didn't invent metalcore, but I do see why the above guy said that, it's a fair assumption to modern metalcore.) so pretty much pre 2004 or whenever it was they got big.

I'll say this though and I hope someone sees it too.

metalcore now is like Glam rock, one kid had a great new sound and played it with their band, they got some attention then next thing every kid on the block tried doing the exact same thing and it got really fucking boring really fucking fast..

and I'm sick of it... I'm sick of hardcore bands aswell... They, for the most part DO sound the same.. through song to song I litterally can't tell them apart in a live gig.. I saw Despised Icon support Parkway Drive last night... Could not tell a song apart from the next one.

There's great and shit bands of every genre, I usually don't pay attention to genres or even think about what genre a band is until someone asks me.

"What you listening to, man?"
"Vespers Descent"
"What kinda genre are they?"
"Er... I dunno.. like..melodic death?"

^ I get this kinda thing alot.

This is what i have to say about metalcore, hardcore, any core really. Growing up in orange county during the time all this really started coming to life, i noticed the complete drop of real good meat and potatoes metal. I Hate the genre especially because when i was age 14 to 20 I wanted to be in a good tight legit metal band. Whenever I would meet anyone who wanted to supposedly start a "metal band" what they really meant was either hardcore or metalcore. This happened every time I started to form a band without fail, and I have made ( and needless to say left) many bands. :gethim:

every time they would play something along these lines

E-
B-
G-
D-----------------------------------------------------------7 7
A-------5-------5--------7-----7-------8--------7 8 5---------- 8
D-0-0-0---0-0-0---0-0-0---000---0-0-0----7 7 7------7 7 7

or whatever, i hate playing in drop D. it's a mortal sin in my opinion (unless it's for playing 10 years gone )

anyways that's my frustration with growing up in Orange county and having long natural unkempt hair instead of died black pussy ass hair.

FUCKING THIS.

I left my last band.. who were all good friends of mine partly because of the other guitarrist insisting on playing metalcore and the singer wanting to do hardcore and partly because the scene and attitude of metalcore pretty much turned the other guitarrist and close friend into a prick. and he's still being a prick, this does sound stupid, would take me a while to explain what I mean.

Also.. when people say they're in a core band, why don't they say when asked their genre "I play in a metalcore band" they said "I'm in a metal band" - "What genre?" - "er.. uhuh.. metal".."What metal?" - "core.*smug face*"

I like the riff tab.. :( So true.

I see where you're coming from. I've actually seen Converge at least once or twice, but I never really heard the "metal" in their music. It was pretty straight up hardcore IMO, but I don't want to argue about genre names and lame stuff like that.
I just think Killswitch found the perfect mix of hardcore breakdowns and metal with their first couple albums. Then it just got gay and turned into fashion rock and now you have douches running around with plates in their lips and girl jeans.

That's why I only dabble in a few "metalcore" bands, only the really original and talented ones who have something to offer. Otherwise, I'll stick to this. :) Fast pure metal with attitude and killer breakdowns WAY before any of these current pussies were doing it!

I listen to alot of music and i really dont pay attention to how they look or dress, i dont even watch music videos anymore and i dont pay attention to the names of the styles or so called labels that fans give these styles, it just music to me.
I do listen to bands like As i lay dying and Zao and i also listen to Kiss and Ratt, the word metalcore means nothing to me, i listen to whatever i think sounds good to me.
I can say i dont like the look of the kids you guys posted, they look pretty lame and very hot topic.
I dont mind screaming or singing if it suits the song.

Just another lame trend/type of music  that will pass soon enough.

Hmm fashion rock would be a good way of describing the majority of these bands, and the glam simile is something I've been saying for awhile, spot on Twalks.

meh, its slightly better than that crabcore crap. What is crabcore? why is it called that?

I guess ive been locked in the punk rock closet for too long I must of missed all these new genres.

Can some break down the genres and give me some examples of bands from each genre?

Please I need help :D
  Trust me brother, your better off not knowing

I hate the core where they sing and then do sucky screams. And deathcore. I like chimaira and log is tolerable sometimes. Actually I only really like the album chimaira...

Yeah, I dig plenty of metalcore bands, but there are plenty of annoying and repetative bands in the genre. Happens in any genre that gets popular. And yeah the fashion is retarded, but it is just as retarded to not listen to a band merely based on how they dress. Hell, if that were the case I couldn't listen to black metal either

I think a big benefit of metalcore is that it is the buffer for a lot of people to get into "real metal" or whatever gay-ass genre someone wants to call it. My progression into getting into more traditional metal pretty much followed in the form Linkin Park -> As I Lay Dying -> then everything else. And I know similar progressions happen with a lot of people so it has its uses there.

Anyway, bottom line, fuck genres, listen to the music you like and don't worry about how simple it is or what other people think. Rock on

Fuck yeah :rawk: :rawk:

Cookie-monster vocals in general, are just a bad idea. I don't care which branch of core it is...

Death-Melodic-Thrash-Core... Hardcore... Thrash... I can't for the life of me tell the difference any more!

Yes you did. :aww: That Attack Attack song makes me want to go on a killing spree and then finish myself off by hanging myself with my guitar strap.
This page sums it up pretty well.
