Metallica on Howard Stern

Someone needs to take the Diezel VH4 away from James... his tone can't get much muddier, darker, and less defined. Het needs to go back to a Mesa Mark IIC+. Now!
 
My first thought was "i saw this movie 31 years ago" but it did sound pretty good and i enjoyed it.

They still got it. :thumbsup:

I heard they lost their ass money wise on their last tour so maybe they can do well this time.
 
Pretty sure it's all Axe Fx here. I'm a Fractal user but holy shit the guitar tone in that MOP clip is atrocious. Muddy, lacking balls, and completely lifeless.
 
Man, you all are a tough crowd. Leather sniff much? For all the great things that occurred here all you have to say is that JH's tone sucked? Damn can they do anything right? It's in a small studio, volume is probably at a whisper compared to regular arena levels. It's probably fairly early and vocals can be a bitch, especially at low volumes, but James sounded great. Kirk sounded as good as he ever has. I know they've played this song thousands of times but they were tight. I've heard too many other bands play their old stuff and it's been a mess. I paid attention to the overall mix and thought the sound was huge.

They are using Fractal. I see little green screens. At 4:45 MOP looks like it was edited. I wonder if they cleaned it up for the video.
 
I thought the tone was meaty. Even if it was modeled, it was modeled after meat. You guys use to much treble..

Not bad for a morning performance. I bet they were up all night and haven't even slept..

Sounds like poor channel switching by the guitar tech and/or poor transition by Kirk when going to the clean patch.
 
EMG pickups kick all kinds of ass. If you can't get massive crushing heavy tone with them you're doing it wrong. User error.

Sure for that one riff he plays twice for 5 seconds by himself his guitar tone was not amazing but listen to the mix as a whole, it sounded great.

Kirk nailed that solo too, really awesome to see them jamming in a small room.

The camera cuts to a different angle at the same exact second as the sound changes,looks odd.
 
Stern's wig/hair transplant system looks fucking ridiculous. Grey beard and jet black hair.
 
It was just a bad mix overall, but usually these types of performances are.

I know they are tight like they used to be, but still love listening to them perform. Excited for the new album.

They (amongst many others) have used EMGs for ever and never had problems sounding good.
 
I dig emgs for certain things, passives for certain things.
Emg is part of metallica's sound and has been for a very long time.
For metal, yeah emgs dominate
