I just watched it thru my phone. I liked the performance.
But all my clips I listen to in the phone sound about the same.
They still play tight.

I probably couldn't name 4 Metallica songs and just never liked them, but I thought they were super tight.

Sounds like my days of drinking and dating...

Wasn't always sure of the names, but definitely remembered if the performance was tight

Listen to the riff Hetfield does on his own at 0.55 in the vid - what kind of weird guitar sound is that?! It's like single coils but with loads of mush on top.

Even if it is Fractal stuff there's SO many people getting amazing guitar tones out of it I can't believe this is what Metallica of all bands have ended up with.

I wonder if their "new" tones have something to do with them using IEM now. Maybe their old tone was to harsh in ear and this sounds better.

It's the fucking Howard Stern Show.... They did an appearance. They laid down a tune. The played. The ratings went up and Howard got paid and Metallica got paid.

It's that fucking simple. For the love of christ who gives a shit about their tone?!?!? It was a cameo appearance on a radio talk-show program. Let it go. No one cares. Be happy they're still laying decent music out for the masses.

And buy a goddamn Marshall if you want to "cop" that authentic "Marshall tone".
RT....I'm losing patience here :gethim:

I think it's got more to do with them normally playing stadiums and arenas. If you take a mid-scooped/hi-gain guitar sound throw it into a huge open space, it's going to get lost in everything else going on.

I also think Stern is the greatest interviewer of all time. If dick and fart jokes are all you've picked up from him, you only caught about 20% of what he was about. He's entirely out of touch these days, but through the 80's/90's/00's that show was an incredible social commentary wrapped up in a satirical format. But about the interviewing, no one can get someone to open up like him. Sure, he'll start them off with some silly sex question, but that's just to break down a wall.....once he gets past that stuff, it's open game on questions. His interview with Scott Weiland was really great.....Scott would have blown off and lied to most other interviewers, but Howard got straight up truth out of him and really got him to say exactly what he was going through.

And no band has ever sounded good coming through that show. Ever. Bryan Adams plugged an electric in direct and sang a tune back in the day, that wasn't bad at all....but most musical performances have been a mix nightmare.

I've played radio a few times and the only time I remember it sounding good was with two acoustics and two voices. Me and my singer.
Anything with a loud rock band is tough. Certainly trying to contain a band like Metallica and make them sound good in that situation would be difficult.

I think they sounded great. Were the tones perfect? No. It's rock n roll. Who cares?

James' vocals have drastically improved over the past few years.

The 3 songs they played were super tight. Probably the best performance I've seen from them in ages. And yes the tone sucked but it is what it is.

I'm sure they were using their B rigs.
Lol probably using thier E rigs which would be our expensive A rigs

Yep AxeFX in a small enclosed space. Sounds like total shit. Nice performance though.

Uhm... well I liked it. Even very dry ... probably it lacks some space.

I dunno, both James & Kirk's guitar tone sounded really fucking good and cut clear through the mix when I saw them live in Minnesota this past August.

Just watched the H.S. clip again. They sound good here imo. In all honesty, the drums sound off here and there, maybe it's me, but he's off time a few spots, other than that, they were pretty good there.
