Stern's wig/hair transplant system looks fucking ridiculous. Grey beard and jet black hair.

He says he never dyed his hair. Which of course he's soo full of shit. He is such a woman when it comes to hygiene, appearance, etc. His wife though, holy shit. Isn't it amazing what money can buy.

Watched the vid.

Tones sound direct to me. And very dry...which prob works in an arena very well...in Stern's garage, its kinda tiny sounding.

Who convinced the bass player to ditch the skater/baller getup and stand upright? Always found him very distracting to look at in Metallica but now I'm kinda sad that he's wearing the 'Affliction Uniform' ... I dunno. I also think he was rushing the beat pretty hard.

Meh, Playing under a microscope like that is hard. I've done shit like that and it's a different world from the comfort-zone of a nice loud stage.

I admire the shit out of them for keeping it going.

I had to turn it off as soon as Jaymz opened his mouth :/

Man, you all are a tough crowd. Leather sniff much? For all the great things that occurred here all you have to say is that JH's tone sucked? Damn can they do anything right? It's in a small studio, volume is probably at a whisper compared to regular arena levels. It's probably fairly early and vocals can be a bitch, especially at low volumes, but James sounded great. Kirk sounded as good as he ever has. I know they've played this song thousands of times but they were tight. I've heard too many other bands play their old stuff and it's been a mess. I paid attention to the overall mix and thought the sound was huge.

Yep his tone sucked dead donkey dick. It was bad. Especially when you probably spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on gear, techs, and roadies. I doubt James set up his own rig... while Lars was setting up his own drum kit. So either fire the tech or sound guy. His tone was bad. They pay people lots of money to ensure they don't sound like this video here. It was dark, compressed, and sounded like it was muffled. Go listen to any old live recordings from year the original album was released. Different?

I won't even comment on the performance, as you most likely won't agree with me on that either.

Those live TV studio things are hard and it never sounds right. I thought they did fine.

I just watched the Master footage and damn, I loved that. Like previously said, small gigs like that are pretty easy to fuck up fast. I think his voice is better that it has been in years.

Remember guys god damn it, where not in 1986 no more, nobody will sound the same 30 years later.

Well except maybe Testament wich I think have improved tremendously in the last 30 or so years, these guys rip hard nowadays

Metallica still rocks. I too would wish they work on there tones but alas, out of our control.

Chris

Guys post amp clips here that was recorded with an Iphone in his bedroom and you guys gush over how "fuckin awesome" the tone is. Metallica puts on a pretty kick ass performance of a classic and people bitch that the tone sucks? Welcome to the Rig Talk vortex.

lol. everyone talking shit about Hetfields tone, but none of them are taking the EMG's out of their guitars.....#EMG's suck.

Wow....couldn't disagree more.

EMG's may not be for you, but they certainly don't suck. Different strokes and all that.

I have been using EMG's for well over 20 years and love them. Clean to mean they do the job for me.

I regularly try highly touted passives and none of them have done it for me. Doesn't mean the suck....just aren't for me ;)

And on topic, I haven't heard the whole interview yet, but what I have heard was pretty cool. And I don't care for Hetfields tone here, but as many have said getting good tone in that type of environment is a crapshoot.

I don't have experience with EMG's but seems to me that passive pu's would sound better through a modeler. Weren't EMG's made to push the front of tube amps?

I think Hetfields are a hybrid version I don't like his but I love the I think it's 57 65 or something those are awesome pickups. I appreciate passives and all but I think emg's are better for me. If you use the 81 specifically and goto a music store such as sam ash or gc and see a used amp you like you can grab a decent guitar with emgs and figure out if that amps for you. Because you can dial to the pickup that way you don't have to go home and get your certain guitar with its special pickups and woods that don't really matter anyway and then try to dial your tone into that amp. I guess what I'm saying is the 81 eliminates unnecessary variables. That being said the Het set created variables his tone didn't need and so has the VH4 which is a great amp. But whenever I hear his pickups with the VH4 I don't think it's a good combo. I think maybe the Het set would work with the multi watt better because that's already a fizz box maybe they would cancel that out when run together lol.

I think if you're a fan of Metallica, you would have nothing bad to say about the above performance. Tight, and well done. Is it the album mix and tone? No. But it's still damn fun to watch and listen to.

They did Sad But True even better, IMHO.

Stern had Steve Vai on YEARS ago. Vai apparently tried to bring in a full stack of Marshalls and a rack of effects but they couldn't manage it so Vai had to plug into a Rockman. You could tell he wasn't happy about it, he just played basic riffs and Howard fooled around trying to sing over it.

Here was an SRV interview Stern had. He is one of the best interviewers.

quote = He is one of the best interviewers.

Ha! You're messing with us.

Stern: 'please welcome the creator of the universe...GOD HIMSELF!!!'
Robin: 'ooooh... that sounds important!?!?'
God: 'Hello Howard'
Stern: 'So tell me about Eve .... was she fine as hell? Did she have sweet sweet bodacious body stuff?'
God: 'She cursed mankind with sin Howard'
Stern: 'oooh she sounds naughty. ... I'd like to put my pee pee in her'
Robin: 'oh Howard, you're bad....hahahaha'

The mix was not that great.... Not uncommon when the band does not control the mix. But over all I thought it was a pretty bad ass...

I thought the tone was meaty. Even if it was modeled, it was modeled after meat. You guys use to much treble..

I like a lot of treble. Is that bad?

I'm really interested to hear how Het and the boys respond to Rig-Talk's take on their tone and overall performance on the Howard Stern Show. I'm staying tuned in for this one, absolutely.

As for Stern's wife, meh... Dime a dozen. You don't need money for that, you just need game.

Carry on.
