Would love to see a shoot out with a Helios and be100 and Colby time machine

Thanks for watching! While tweaking this amp I kept thing that it was voiced so specifically that it might not be for everyone looking for a modded plexi type amp. Yet, everyone who plays seems to love it. And they all sound different, just like a real plexi I guess. I wasn't expecting that characteristic. I thought that adding gain would homogenize the tone and feel to a degree.

I will say, the upper midrange chirp in the voicing is always there. You can't really dial it out. Beyond that, the tweaked EQ, input jacks and modes make it very versatile.

There's someone looking for a Smallbox in the Classifieds. I mean, how many gold panel Marshall clones does one person need after all?.....

;)

Indeed! If I did it right this would be the last one. Time will tell.

It sounds incredible. I personally wish you had included a clean channel.

Sounds absolutely killer. I don't suppose you can use an a/b switch and plug into both the high and low inputs at the same time to toggle between the two without having to walk over to the amp. Would be useful on stage?

Also, what is this "clean" tone of which you speak? :D

I posted this on gearpage also, just to clarify:

One thing that came up in discussion is the idea that there was clipping in the FET boost circuit. Like a typical pedal circuit. Actually, there is no clipping at all in the boost circuit. It just increases the guitar signal hitting the first tube gain stage. Any extra "gain" AKA clipping is happening in the tube stages.

This boost circuit uses the same high voltage FET as our Zero Loss FX loop. In the loop circuit this unique FET allows full signal to pass from tone stack to phase inverter. Up to 90V P-P signal. Hense, the "zero loss" moniker.
By comparison, a typical chip based loop passes up to about 15V P-P max.

The catalyst for the boost circuit was a sim Steve Miller did in LTSpice emulating a typical Marshall input tube stage. His analysis led to a FET based circuit that behaves like a tube input stage.
Steve offered this to me and I tried it. Very, very cool. But, not exactly what was needed for the boost in this amp. So I tweaked it quite a bit and added a high cut and low cut EQ.
Steve's original circuit was capable of about 40db of gain, far more than necessary or useable. I lowered that to 22db and this helped optimize signal to noise ratio.

Hope that helps clear up and misconceptions about what this boost circuit does. And also gives all due props to Steve for his great design work and generous sharing off all things technical. I've learned a lot from him over the years.

Maybe on next year's model...

You could. But I suspect noise would be an issue. I'll try it and see.

Gazing into my crystal ball.............what do I see, in the future George building a 200 watt Major monster with all the bells & whistles ???

:D :D

For those of you unfamiliar with George's work, trust me it is impeccable. I needed to sell my 12000, but only because I needed the flexibility of my XTC. The tone and build quality of the Metro stuff is amazing.

so, is the modded mode intended to cover jcm800 type tones...or modded jcm800...or both, depending on where gain is set

Mod mod can do JCM800 level of gain, but it retains the plexi voicing. It's more of a modded plexi tone than later, master volume circuit tone.

i think i will pick up one of these when that clean channel is included.

sign me up for that model!
