Hi guys- really good questions actually-- on the Gforce thing, yes it'll work- sort of. You won't be getting the real full tone of your amp, only the preamp. Best to figure out a way to get a line out POST-speaker output. You'll also probably have a ground loop situation, running that way, something easily solvable with either the Suhr or Faustine boxes, as they both have ground switches.

The difference between a speaker sim like a Palmer and an IR is an analog speaker sim is basically an eq curve. Mimicking the eq curve of a guitar speaker. Which can be cool, but- An IR actually digitally captures what a certain cab, mic, mic position, and mic pre sound like. Yes you get the EQ curve but much more, Including the "air" around the sound and resonance/tone of the cab, etc. It's just more detailed.

Awesome article! Well, I said that already... I just bought a 4x12 Rectifier IR from Redwirez. That's how it sounds.

Thanks for the tip, Pete!

are people doing this live? (with loaded down real amp heads)
bringing a laptop instead of a cab?

if the tour you are on is running digital consoles, you could even just apply the IR's at the monitor and FOH desks. Digital boards all run plug-ins. So all you'd need is your amp and load box setup. I don't know if anyone does this yet- but you certainly could.

I used the Axe FX on my recent tour, into the new Atomic 50/50 and rental Marshall cabs for onstage monitoring- and I ran the 2nd set of outs to the house with Redwirez IR's. Another way to do it!

very cool
I plan on getting an axe in the next 6 months and am praying it will work direct (live) your statement makes me realize it should

an axe fx should not need a cab if you have good irs and the venue has a decent pa

In other words, the audience will dig it through the pa system
even if you the performer wish you had $5K power amp into two $2K speaker cabs stereo miced....

in the end you are spending all that money for some stage vibe

and

Ya it's interesting- depending on the cabs and mics we got each day (the Soundguy did mic the cabs as well), the IR's were sometimes better, or sometimes he preferred the mics a bit over the IR's. If the cabs were beaten up 1960a's with 75 watt celestials and the mics were 57's, well, no doubt the IR's sounded better (I had a blend of 2 different greenbacks with 57's loaded up for IR's). If the cabs were 1960 BX's with greenbacks (my fav Marshall generic cab) and the mics were Shure KSM32's, well, the real mics and cabs would win out. But I only got that combo twice out of 16 shows.... Usually it was v30 cabs with 57's, which sounded pretty good.

Bottom line- we loved having the consistency of the IR's every day! You always know you are going to have a great workable tone. No surprises. On fly dates or a tour where you gotta rent backline, it's a no brainer.

Here's more good for thought- getting a bit off topic, but it's an Axe FX advantage and cool application, for guys who have the ways and means and want this- even if you have a great traditional rig with amp(s), cabs, pedalboard and/or rack- with an axe, you can digitally recreate your whole "real" rig/all your presets. Use a 2nd midi controller the same as your main rig's controller (i always carry a backup midi controller anyway). Then if your amp/rack/pedalboard goes down on a tour, simply plug into the axe, which you already have patched onto the PA with IR's duplicating your cabs, throw the other midi controller out
there, and you are up and running on a virtual "b" rig.

Having said all this- my fuckin brand new MacBook pro laptop just died a permanent death and I have to return it and start over. That comp replaced another that just died in spectacular fashion. Which is all making me want to eschew all this tech in favor of my 100 watt Suhr handwired sl68 a few pedals (analog of course) and a fuckin guitar.

That Suhr would guarantee a great tone for sure!
